98 GMC Safari EGR problem

I have a 1998 GMC Safari and recently the SES light went on. I took it to Autozone the get the computer checked and there was 2 codes-P1404 and P1870- the one I had a question about is for P1404 (EGR closed position performance). How do I fix this? The van has a exhaust leak believe from the header or cat. but I dont know if that would affect this. Thank you for all replys and advice.

An EGR held open by a piece of carbon will cause this code. I would only use a GM EGR valve. Also there is a reprogram for the PCM for this. I would take it to the dealer and have both done.
