duramax oil change light

txg,

It's based on several things as to when the light comes on.  The computer monitors the hours, RPM's etc...

If you drive alot of highway miles the light probably won't come on for about 5000 miles.  In town I've seen mine come on in 2600 miles...

Just out of curiosity, how much are you guys paying for an oil change on the Duramax?  A buddy of mine complains about the cost of an oil change on his 'Stroke, was wondering if GM's diesels were in the same range -

Actually the oil change on the duramax is comparable with any other gas engine.

I pay about 50-75 to have the oil changed on my powerstroke but only about 30-35 on the duramax

Honestly I don't know what oil I am running right now, it is whatever the oil change place put in it when i had the oil changed the first time.

Why is that?  What's the difference?

Even though I don't have an oil burner, my oil change light has yet to come on.  But with 3,000 miles on it, I've changed the oil three times, so I haven't given it a chance too.  :D

My only cost is the cost for oil and filter as I do it myself.

The Duramax takes 10qts per oil change, and the PSD takes just about 15qts.  So that is some of the difference, and the PSD filter might be a bit more expensive.  Don't know on that one though.  But the reason the PSD requires such a large oil capacity is because it uses high pressure engine oil to fire the injectors. (HEUI hydraulic accuated electronically controlled unit injector.)

hello,

on my 2001 2500hd with 6.0l I notice a strange thing.  Whenever I change the oil, the oil light comes on about a day or two after I do the change.

Figure that's because the computer is picking up a drastic change and reports it as needing to be changed.

As for using the light as a guide, never have yet.  I just go every 3000 miles.  Wonder what the warranty situation is with the oil light.......if you follow that, and only change the oil when it tells you too, could you be in for warranty problems because you aren't changing at every 3k.  Just a curious question.

Pennscapes,

Did you reset the process:

To reset the Change Engine Oil message:

1.  Turn the ignition key to RUN with the engine off.

2.  Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal three times with five seconds

3.  If the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message flashes for five seconds, the system is reset.

I have changed oil 3 times, once at 5000 kms, again at 11,000 and then I changed the 3rd time at 19500 kms. The change oil light didn't come on till I had 8000 km on it. I waited till the 2nd oil change to reset the light and it reappeared two days before I was planning to do the third change. So for my type of driving I seem to get 8000 k before the light reappears.

The oil I use is Esso 15 x 40 HD-3 in a ten litre jug for $18.99 and I buy the AC delco filters for $17.70 each.  :D
