new fuel pump issues

I need help asap and thanks for any advise you guys can help me with. So last night i autostarted my truck and left it running with no issues, it timed out and I went to restart it but would only turn over and would not start at all. The fuel gage said E but there is a half tank. I checked all the fuses, and all were good. Then I went to a local salvage yard to pick up a fuel pump for 170 bucks, I installed it and still nothing, so thinking I might have bought a bad fuel pump I used a multi meter to check for power and I do, the square plug has one wire with power and the flat one had all three wires with power. I banged on the tank and nothing, disconnected the fuel lines fromt he pump and briefly tried to start it and nothing came out. The bed is still off the truck, do you have to connect the wire connectors in the back of the truck again to complete a circut?

Not sure what the heck this means.

 

The power for the pump is the grey wire in the four wire connector right at the tank. Black is the ground. So, do you have power AND ground when you're cranking the engine to start it? Note that power is only supplied when the engine is turning over or for the first 2-3 seconds after turning the key ON.

 

Did you replace the whole fuel pump module or just the pump itself? If the module wasn't replaced, look real close at the connection on top underside of the module. Those often burn when the pump is failing.

 

If you have power and ground at the pump and no bad connections, then it sounds like you got a bad pump. Try a new one rather than one that's being laying around a junk yard for heaven knows how long.

If you took the bed off to replace the fuel pump you removed the ground to the filler cap for the gas. This ground shares the same ground with the fuel pump. Tighten the screw to the ground and it should fire up. Good luck!

Don't you hate it when you over look something, I had my friend check the fuses and he missed one that was burned up, a 20 amp next to the fuel pump relay. Thanks a lot for your input though. Dan
