Headlight mod DRLs

I tired to make my DRL's come on all the time when my low beams were on lastnight. I ran a diode from the 85 pin of the HDLMP realy to the 85 pin of the DRL relay. It worked just perfect when I turned on the lights manually. But when I started the truck and the lights came on automatically due to it being dark the DRLs would not come on. They still wouldn't come on even when I when I put the truck in gear and turned the lights on manually.... why is this?
