1987 Gmc Transfer Case Help

i have a 1987 GMC Sierra classic i dont have the instructions on how to get it into 4 wheel drive on the viser, but i heard you had to have it in Netural then shift it on the floor to 4h or 4L. Im not sure if this is a problem but ill put it in N and then ill shift into 4h and it goes in perfect but once i shift to go into 4L it grinds so ill turn the truck off and put it in 4L and it goes in but i cant get it out of 4 wheel drive without turnin the truck off . anyone know any ideas on what it could be Thanks.

first off you only have to put it in neutral for 4 low. Try checking the fluid or if the linkage is binding mine was seized from not being used.
