Hd Driveshaft / U-joints

So i had the driveshaft out last weekend to get to the exhaust better.... I found that my clunk is coming from a completely dry slip yoke and my u joints are going bad. I've never had an aluminum driveshaft and was wondering if these things are safe to hammer on to get the joints out. I know guys with the diesels aren't twisting them until about the 1100 ft lbs range, but torsional load is way different than a hammer. Any opinions?

While a bearing-press or bench-vise are much more ideal for doing those u-joints, I've hammered them out of aluminum drive shafts many times.

Im gunna press them in. I think they might have to be hammered out though, theyre rusted. No one around me carries Spicer brand u joints, and the dealer wanted over 100 a piece for u joints. :shakehead::confused:

I had mine go with 36,500 on the clock (2500 HD 4x4) and the dealer covered them no charge.

Only one went and it was $121 I think, not including $79/hr labor.

Try rockauto. The most expensive u-joint for the HD was 28.79. You'll just have to figure out which one fits your particular. Pretty easy catalog to use but there are alot of different ones for that year.
