Recommended Posts

Well I hope to change my differental and transfer case fluid today and replace it with Mobile 1 synthetic atf. I just need to know how much fluid I will need to fill both differentals and the transfer case. Thanks in advance guys!

Front diff takes a little less than 2 quarts. Rear takes almost 2.5 quarts, so you might be able to get away with four total but might need five. I havent done my trans yet but it should take 5-6 quarts with just the pan drop and filter change. I think 16 total with a complete flush.

Well I'm not changing the tranny fluid, just the transfer case and differentals. The only reason is sounds like your talking about the transmission is because you mentioned a pan drop and filter change. And it doesnt look like the transfer case would take 5 or 6 quarts..

Transfer case takes 2.5 I believe. Sorry I didn't read. I did it years ago, but I forgot. I'm changing my transfer case and trans next week if it doesn't rain. Mine both take Dextron VI synthetic trans fluid, so I got 8 quarts to cover the trans and transfer case. Check with your dealer because your transfer case probably takes the blue Autotrac II fluid. I have a 1/2 quart left from doing my Suburban a few years ago, and I believe I bought 3 quarts. I would pick up 3 cuz I think it will be a little over 2 quarts to fill. Good luck.

Ok, Is the fill plug on the transfer case the one that is about 4 inches up from the bottom on the back side of the t-case? There is another one at the bottom of the case that appears to be the drain plug to me... The one that is about 4 inches up had that blue stuff sprayed on it....

The fill plug is on the back side of the 'case, up a couple of inches from the bottom, the blue stuff is just an indicator marker, don't use any teflon tape on the plug.

Fill plug is the top one on the backside and the bottom is the drain plug. I just changed my transfer case fluid, and it took a little less than 2 quarts. About 2 full quarts came out, it actually drained a little from the fill plug too, but it would not take a full 2 quarts. Pretty easy change.
