Headers For 6.0 Hd

Recommended Posts

This question is actually for my father. He has a 2000 2500 HD Silvy with a 6.0 in it and recently we discovered his drivers side exhaust manifold collapsed and is leaking. We discussed options for replacement and headers seemed the best way to go considering a GM exhaust manifold would be expensive anyhow. Any recommendations for headers? Brand? Long or short tube? :chevrolet:

I'm not very familiar with different brands of truck headers but I do know quite a bit about C5 Corvettes since I did LT's on my friends and mine.

I would suggest shorty headers since they will bolt up to stock y pipe, usually are smog legal, and there will be fewer 02 sensor issues.

Long tubes will give a bit more hp, but not more than 5hp...however you'll need to adapt them to your stock Y pipe, or need a complete exhaust from the headers back and it will cost you BIG bucks. Also, the 02's will be located further from your heads and you WILL have 02 sensor code problems...I am having plenty on my C5 even with a good tune. Places that claim 20hp include the factory computer retuning that will net you 15-20hp on their own. Slap on a set of LT's and I highly doubt you'll ever see anywhere near 20hp improvement.

Stay with shorty headers that are stainless. Ceramic coated WILL rust after a few years and then you'll be regretting them. Do NOT wrap them with header tape or they will rust prematurely (even stainless according to some people).

Save your money and put it toward a cam if you're looking for more hp.
