Head's Up Display (hud)

I would absolutely love it if I could get the HUD from a corvette and put in my truck. Has anyone ever seen this done, or even if there is a kit that could do it? It would be freaking awesome.

I would like to know this also since everything about new vehicles is electronic. For example someone is selling that aftermarket display that plugs into the OBDII port and lets you get readings on several items, like trans temp. You can mount it on the pillar.

 

Anyway, I would be intersted if something could project speed, rpm fuel and temp. I guess it's where does the data come from? Come on big GM, let folks have some fun!

Due to the slope of the windshield I think it would difficult to manage optics the way the normal way HUDs in vehicles are done. I think you'd have to move to a system similar to the way fighter jets do heads up displays, which would be rather distracting to untrained drivers.

no the slope wouldn't cause much issue .. reasion i say that ... in the Grand Prix GTP i had for a while it had a HUD and the window in that is as sloped if not moreso then in the trucks ...

 

for a while there was a kit that you could buy which mounted on the dash .. and you had a clear 'decal' you would place on the window where the projection hit ... which would work in pretty much any car ..

Thats precisely my point. A truck's windshield is steeper, instead of illuminating a section of the windshield (or using a polarized section) you end up bouncing the light right into the drivers eyes, or else a polorized section of the windshield would be plainly visable to the driver at all times.

After a bit of research I found some more information. The first problem is an image displayed on a windshield typically ends up fuzzy because it is laminated glass. GM's system uses a special laminated glass for the entire windshield. That means if you were to take the HUD out of a vette, gtp, bonneville, etc and used it you would see two distinct overlayed images slightly out of alignment (1/8-1/4" depending on your arangement). This special laminate glass only works up to a certain point before you start to see the two images again, which somewhat explains the lack of it in SUVs.

 

People that have elected to build their own HUDs so far have used a teleprompter screen which is nothing more than a semi-silvered mirror.
