Engine Noises

My engine has started making some strange noises recently. Mostly the noises are when the engine is cold, like first thing in the morning right when i start it up and begin the drive to work. it makes several different sounds. the one that concerns me the most is it sounds like its suddenly become asthmatic or something. when i accellerate it lets out a huge wheeze or groan. other times there is no wheezing, but other sounds like squeaks and a very light tapping/knocking sound.

this has me a little worried.

any thoughts?

Knocking is probably csk. More pronounced after cold start up, although I can sometimes hear knocking well after engine warm up when traveling (1500+ rpm) and completely letting off accelerator. Related to carbon buidup. Seems to not be a short nor long term problem. Many posts about csk over the years. Other noises, don't know. BTW, what part of Virginia?

Cold Start Knock Do a search on here, there are numerous threads about it. The valve tap is normal too. I switched my oil to Mobile one and it got worse. I then started using Amsoil and I can barely hear it now. Dont know what to make about the groan or wheeze. Power steering pump?

*edit* Does the sound happen at park/neutral or in gear?

Do a search on CSK. Like I said many posts and much info on it over the years.

I'm in Suffolk. Grew up in Fairfax. Wife's from Shenandoah Valley. In-laws in Lake Anna. A lot of friends in Richmond area. Graduated from and work at Old Dominion (Heard of Justin Verlander?). And many trips to OBX.

The cold start swishing roar, is the fan coming on in whats known as "morning sickness". The (cold thick) clutch silicone usually drains withing a half mile and disengages the fan.

Try running with a higher octane gas. It worked for me. Well it worked for my truck not my pocket book.

I second the recomendation for higher octane fuel. The 6.0L loves 89 and above. I ran 87 once when I filled up the truck for the first time (dealers in CT are cheap). It drove me nuts.

Morning sicknes?? haha. it sometimes sounds like a baby rattle or something as soon as i left off the accelerator (just after i start it up and pull out of the driveway). not a real hard knock, but more like really fast "ticks" . it's not extremely loud, but audible over my exhaust (turbo headers).

do i need to be concerned?

Nope! don't know a Justin Verlander. I have friends and family up on lake anna as well. they're all on the "warm" side. i was born in roanoke myself. spent my extensive collegiate career at longwood in farmvegas, BFE Va.

girlfriend went to school at NSA in suffolk - Portsmouth native. Her brother is an ODU grad. he's about 28 years old.

i usually hear the sound when the vehicle is in gear, right as i'm accelerating after starting the vehicle after it's been parked for a couple hours. sometimes it happens in park right after i turn the key.

I don't think you should be concerned. Have you done a search on csk posts? Lots of input/opinions on csk over the years, nothing really relating it to serious problems.

Verlander is a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. Threw a no-hitter this year and has done pretty well for himself. Not bad for a boy from the Goochland area.

My in-laws are on the "hot" side too. And it is the hot side, water temps measure 103-104 degrees just outside the reactor during summer. I don't know how the fish survive. Stripers especially. It does get 50-60 feet deep in spots.

Longwood, huh? Ever fished Briery Creek Lake? Some big ones in there.

I don't think it is a major problem, but for me even 89 doesn't work. I have to go straight 93 all the time. My pocketbook doesn't like it, but hey, I knew going into it that this bloated behemoth wasn't going to be easy on gas.

OBX is a blast. Some friends and i camped for memorial day (illegaly) about 19 miles north of corolla, drove straight up the shore til we about hit the Va line. threw up a tent, dug a fire pit, and cast the lines in all night. the truck was great on the sand. my sig was taken during sunrise the next morning, actually.

Briery Creek is one of the reasons my undergrad career lasted nearly 6 years. i spent more time on that lake than i did in any classroom. when the bass were biting, i was playin hooky and settin up on the shore. the fish in there are MONSTERS. that's probably the only place i've fished where you can catch a citation largemouth from the shore using a bobber and a minnow.
