Add Rearview Camera To 2008 Silverado?

What is necessary to add a rearview camera to a 2008 Silverado Crew Cab with the factory NAV system w/o DVD player or rear entertainment system? I'd like to use the factory NAV display if possible. Will the NAV/radio unit need reprogrammed by the dealer? It looks like there are lots of choices for cameras but I wasn't sure how to integrate it to use the factory display.

Thanks. I had looked at that thread but I wasn't sure if a $250 + Lockpin interface was needed to get a video RCA input for the factory screen or if JP Customs (or others) had a less expensive option. Also, the truck does not have any DVD player, front or rear. It does sound like I will need to have the dealer reflash the Nav/radio unit though. I asked my local Chevy dealer but they weren't very helpful. Guess I need to give JP Customs a call.

I called JP Customs today and it is only $10 for the harness to add a video RCA input to the stock Nav screen. Now I just need to decide which camera to buy and where to install it.

 

 

Let me know how you do with the dealer reprogramming the Nav unit for rear camera. There seems to be much difficulty in getting dealers to do this. The Tech 2 reprogramming unit seems to look up by VIN. If your VIN does not come with the feature, it will not show up as a selection. Some say the Tech 2 must be manually input with a VIN from a vehicle that has the feature from the factory. Then the unit will show and allow the rear camera selection. You may have to call Coastal and discuss it with them. I am at [email protected]. My truck will not arrive until Jan, 08.

The Chevy dealer even called JP Customs and had them walk them through the process but it still didn't work. They said they couldn't reach the appropriate screen to make the change.

 

Has anyone with a 2008 Silverado (or Sierra) been able to add a rearview camera and view it on the factory navigation screen? The Chevy dealer said they need to call GM Headquarters and get a VCI? or something to give them security access to modify this part of the program???

Just got my truck on 2/18/08. Have not tried to add the rear camera yet, but with a LEER 100XQ, it is needed to properly see out the back. The truck rear window is tinted and the canopy is tinted. With both tinted, the rear view is very dark and hard to see anything. I will do the rear this spring. I am staying with my non-DVD nav unit since i see no value in playing DVD from the front seats.

We were originally going to get a LEER 100XQ for my dad's truck but we purchased an A.R.E. MX instead for the extra height. It also has a tinted back glass and makes it hard to see backing up. We ended up installing the camera in the tailgate bezel which required no drilling of the sheet metal.

 

We don't have too much invested in the camera system yet. I bought a camera on eBay for $60 (+$10 S/H) and the RCA pigtail for $10 (+$12 S/H) from JP Customs. I had some spare RCA audio cable from stereo installs that was long enough to reach from the camera to the NAV screen. We're still waiting to hear if GM is going to give the VCI code to our local Chevy dealer to activate the camera feature. Hopefully they do and I'm guessing it will be the most expensive part of the camera install ;-)

 

As a contingency plan I did see that PAC makes a device called the VCI-GM3 to add a camera input to the factory NAV screen. But at ~$300 I'm thinking it will be cheaper (and easier) for the Chevy dealer to reprogram the NAV radio. I'll let you know how it turns out. BTW, I did call Coastal and they said GM has been providing the necessary VCI code to the local Chevy/GMC dealers in their area.

The camera now works with the factory NAV screen :-) GM provided the VCI to our local Chevy dealer and they reprogrammed the truck today. I was right about the reprogramming being the most expensive part of the camera project. They charged $149 for a couple hours labor but at least the camera works and it was half the price of a VCI-GM3 unit ;-)

I have a 2008 Silverado with Factory Nav also and want to install the Costaletech GMX-320 with backup camera. I live in Phoenix, Az and haven't found a Dealer that will reprogram my truck. When they call the factory for the VCI code, the factory doesn't recommend this for liability reasons and thus will not reprogram my truck. Did you use a dealer in my local? Any recommendations on how to approach the dealer to get them to do this? I haven't purchased or installed the camera yet. I thought that this may be the best approach to have them reprogram the computer first. I think to verify reprogrammed functionality without a camera is to get a blank screen when shifting into reverse. If anyone knows of a dealer in Arizona that has done this reprogramming for them, please let me know. Thanks.

      This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.

      2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.

      Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉

      Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
