Can I Permanently Disable The Auto-dimming Mirrors?

2004 Silverado SS with auto-dim rear view and driver side mirror. Yes, I know I can disable the auto-dimming by pressing the TEMP button on the rear view mirror for 8 seconds, but it only stays disabled until I restart the truck. I'd like to determine when to activate the dimming feature myself, not when the truck thinks it should be turned on.

Is there a way to disable the auto-dimming so that it stays disabled until I turn it back on (short of removing a fuse)?

Sorry, not sure how I posted this twice. Can't figure out how to delete the duplicate.

Just place a 1/4 inch patch of black tape over the small hole on the right lower edge of the inside mirror. That hole is the PE cell for the auto dimming.

Got a question... why would you not want the auto dimming?

Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a try. Never even noticed a little hole on the lower right side. Speaking of photocells, what's the function of the photocell on the front (forward facing) side of the inside rear view mirror on the driver's side of the mounting post? I always thought the day/nite sensor was the little round thingy at the top-front of the dash in the middle.

It's not that I don't want dimming. I just want to be able to control it when I want it. My rear window is already tinted, so when the auto-dim activates, I find it very hard to see any detail behind me.

On my 04 Tahoe, I've concluded that yes, the round thingy in the top-front middle of the dash is the sensor that automatically turns on the headlights, and the sensor on the forward facing side of the rear view mirror controls the brightness of the mirror display (outside temp, button lights, etc.). I always found it interesting that the two couldn't have ran off the same sensor.

Good to know, klunkerbus. Thanks. I always wondered why the headlights (and interior gage lights) stayed on sometimes when the mirror displays and air bag indicator got brighter. Always seemed like if the mirror display got brighter, the gage lights should have gone out at the same time. Now I know why.
