Fuel Tank Rap Ii

:) I am in the middle of replacing my fuel pump with a question keeping me from proceeding. My old pump has a two wire plug and a four wire plug, replacement Delphi pump only has the four wire plug. I don't know what the dohiccie is that the three wire plug goes to. Is it necessary on my new pump or become an obsolete piece? There is a knockout where the dohiccie could be installed but no mention of it in the destructions.

That 3 wire thingy is a tank pressure sensor and it is necessary for tank emissions. You will have a check engine light forever without it. I have never had one I had to modify. If it were me I'd go to another source and make sure we got the right one, could even be boxed wrong. Good luck.

Thank you Sparkstech! Just didn't want to wait till Monday to take care of it. Tell me... how are those fuel line disconnects supposed to work? I broke the lines off of the old pump trying to squeeze together and pull them apart.

They work just like you think they do. They are usuall the biggest PITA part of a tank removal on any thing 5 years or older even if its not your first time and you have the vehicle on a rack and your not on your back. If you got it all out don't beat yourself, many a tech has thrown tools trying to get them apart.

I went in to Carquest on Monday morn and sure enough they had the right pump available so I swapped em. I was also able to clear the lines of the offending ends of the original pump. Amazing what walking away from a frustrating experience, straight veining a MT DEW and trying again, can do. Now, I'm waiting for a warmer day. The other interesting bit o info I found was that the wiring harness was not routed correctly, resulting in the insulation on the wires being smashed. I'm sure in time they would have wore thru. Good thing the pump failed? I checked continuity on all seven wires just to be sure and they are OK. Placed a layer of electrical tape over the smashed insul on ea one and I'll be sure to route it correctly when it goes back up. Replacement of the fuel filter was without incident, of course. You guys are the best! Thanks for the help and Happy New Year. I'll keep you posted on further developments.
