Ipod Interface & Tahoe 6-disc In Dash Help!

Recommended Posts

Buddy of mine is looking to wire his ipod up to his head unit. I'm having a hard time finding one compatible with the 6-disc in-dash CD changer.

It's going in a 2003 Tahoe and has a 12-pin in the back. I would guess he loses the rear seat radio controls, but he doesn't care about those anyways.

Any help is much appreciated!

Go into the Audio section of this site. Lots of choices. I personally like my USAspec unit. Very easy to use and to install.

I've really been looking at these. If you scan the threads on this site, you'll see that the version of this from Coastaetech is not highly favored. The best two are from PAC Audio and Peripheral. Another is for USA Spec but it doesn't seem quite as capable. Check out their web sites for complete specs and the like. www.peripheralelectronics.com ; www.pacaudio.com and www.usaspec.com . You're looking for ipod solutions or ipod interface.

I have purchased, but not installed yet, a version from Peripheral call the "Gateway" from a local distributor here. Learned alot from their technician. All web sites have "application guides" that tell you which model you need for your vehicle. I believe most are "plug and play" but you will probably have to remove the radio and put this module inline between the factory harness and the radio itself.

I have the Peripheral in my Yukon...and it works great...

I have the Nav. so I can control my iPod through the Nav screen.

PM me if you have any questions.

I have been using the Neucleus Ipod thinggy from logjam for a few years now. Works great for the most part. They are not without problems however as sometimes while listening my gauges will freak out for a minute and reset. Only lasts for like 10 seconds or so and sometimes just a blip. Still pretty annoying. I have heard many folks sending them back and exchanging them but only to have that problem come back. I am certain it has something to do with the security feature in the Bose 6 disc changer.

Other problem is when I use my remote start the security feature is activated and basically the Ipod unit has to be re initialized with the head unit. This meant I had to pull the power plug on the back of the unit and then plug it back in once I disabled the remote starter. I fixed this problem by wiring in a small off/on switch easily accesible and now I just flip that whenever I wanna listen to my Ipod. Whenever I dont use my remote starter, however, there is no problems and I just start up and the Ipod still plays.

The problem with all Ipod interfaces is I got this Ipod unit when 3rd gen Ipods were on the market. Now that I have a 6th gen the features of controlling the Ipod with my head unit no longer function. I basically had to route the cord and Ipod to sit where the cup holders are and I change the songs from the Ipod directly. The newer radios that came in most '07+ have the aux input which is just a stereo 2.5mm jack to the headphone port on the Ipod. Thing with this is you still control the Ipod directly and the radio does not keep the Ipod charged. The Neucleus Unit will not only play your tunes but constantly charge your Ipod too.

While I love my little Ipod widget thinggy I wish there was a better way. In fact I am sure there is. But just keep in mind that those older head units are not very accepting of a 3rd party thinggy mostly because of the security settings. My suggestion, if you really want something that runs smooth, is buy a Bose/Onstar compatible head unit that has all the features put in for the Ipod. This is probably the most effective way of getting the job done and in most cases future proofs you from further Ipod generation changes.
