Fuel Pump Issues

I have an interesting problem. The truck is a 1997 GMC Jimmy 4x4 4.3 with 190,000 miles on the clock. Last Saturday it was 5 degrees here and my wife tried to start the truck only to have it turn over really slow and no fire. I knew the battery was on borrowed time, so I put the jumper cables on it and get nothing but a cranking engine. After diagnoses I realize that the fuel pump is not kicking on. The wierd thing is that I can only get 5 volts back to the pump. I changed the fuel pump oil pressure switch, and checked that the relays were in working order and I still have only 5 volts to the pump. I do have 12 volts at the realys and the wires look good all of the way back. I don't want to change the pump unless it in fact bad ($300+). Can anyone shed some light on this issue or guild me in the right direction. I almost think that I am missing something obvious and that it has something to do with the cold weather/low battery. What do you think.

My first suspect would be connector c107. Unfortunately GM didn't fully switch over to computer based manuals till 1998 and they are way different than a 97 according to the diagrams. There is only a description of where to find it untill I have a paper manual handy. It's described as a cavity (thats holes not necessarely wires) in the engine compartment near the power distribution center. You'll want to check voltage on the grey wire terminal G.

Thanks, I will try to find that tommorrow. I should add that this truck has a remote start that has given us no problems for the past 7 years. Suspecting that it my have caused a possible security problem due to the low battery, the first thing I did was unhook it. So I don't know if this truck has such security measures, but I thought that it might bear mentioning.

Update: I used a jumper on the fuel pump electrical tap and gave the gas tank a good rap with a baseball bat and the pump began working. It sounds horrible so it will be replaced real soon. But now a new problem has arose. I decided to start the truck since it has been almost 3 weeks When it fired it stuttered and almost died for about 5 seconds then the idle sped up and was surging for another 10 seconds then it smoothed out and idled at 2500 RPM and never slowed down. I started it several times only to have it do the exact same thing every time. On a mechanics advice I looked for a vaccum leak and found none. So my new question is could a lack of fuel cause this surging and high idle, it seems to me that the computer is trying adjust the timing to make it run smooth only to have it idle really high. I am no mechanic so i might be way off base, what do you think?

Back up for a second. You are running a jumper so your original problem will still exist if you were testing right. You can have both a bad fuel pump and not enough voltage. When you replace the pump if you only have 5 volts back there you will still have a no start. As far as the idle how long did you let it run each time.

I guess I should have clarified, I used the jumper only until the pump began to run. The pump comes on with the key,build pressure for a couple seconds just like it always has. The only difference is that the pump sounds noticably different and the engine acts as described above. I actually let it run for several minuets while looking for a possible vacuum leak and it showed no sign of slowing. I have not checked voltage since I played with the connectors under the hood. Also there is no difference in the sound of the pump when I have the jumper on or when using the key. You don't think the pump could be running on 5 volts do you? I will check the voltage to the tank again after my son goes to daycare. Oh yeah one more symptom: The gas gauge appears to be pegged way past full and isn't moving, this is new.

I was able to take afew minuets tot est the voltage ging back to the pump again. I don't know why but I now have 12+ volts with and without the jumper. I still have to thump the tank every so often to get the pump to run. I know I have to replace the pump, but I can't explain the hard start, surging and finally very high idle. I hope that this clarifies my current situation a little better.

    • Hi friends - first time poster. I have a 2015 sierra Denali with 150k miles, I’m the second owner and she’s given me 75k of great service. I run a pulse AFM disable device. Starting Thursday when I exited the freeway after a short local ride it started idling rough, with an obvious misfire shake and was down on low end power.  I got it home and hooked it up to my scannner and found no codes but in live data a pretty bad misfire on cylinder 5. I replaced the coil, plug and wire with all new OE replacements (Delphi gn10165 coil, acdelco wire and 41-168 plug). It’s still behaving the same way after firing the parts cannon at it.   I know cyl 5 is a non AFM cylinder so I am not thinking this is AFM related but I’m kinda at a loss. injector? Bent pushrod? It’s running too well over 1k rpm to suggest those IMO. Has anyone chase this issue before and what was it? Any suggestions? 
    • 2017 Silverado L83 5.3l 6speed transmission Hello, not a new member but havent posted in a while and my old signup info isnt working so had to create a new account. anyways, I have an issue with my truck and hope someone can spread some light on whats happening: -when it goes to 4cyl mode it makes a clunk sound (but not when coasting or going downhill) -when in 4 cyl mode and under load it makes a load pulsating sound (not a tick). -goes away completely when in M5 gear or when plugging in an AFM delete. Im guessing it is one of 2 things but im not convinced of either to be honest. 1. lifter stuck in v8 mode 2. torque converter shudder realistically it doesn't seem like the TC as there is no physical vibration , and it never happens in v8 mode. but maybe? and wouldnt a lifter make a sound whether with load or not? any ideas let me know please. thank you!  
    • Which has made me wonder with the various engine failures of a few brands in the last few years, is it sub par materials such as lifters etc causing failures, or bearing clearances on the crank etc or perhaps bad designing of an engine physically or causing too much load on the components due to the hp/torque they can push out of them. Or is the oil viscosity and additive package of current oils or a lack of oil flow by an oil pump not able to supply sufficient oil at idle or under high load at low rpm. Or is it every item I listed that combined together has pushed the limits so far to the left that there is hardly a margin of safety left and add in some fuel dilution and too long of an OCI and premature engine failure is the result ?. 
    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.
