Tough question, depends, if possible for few grand more to "upgrade" to a newer LB7 around '03-early '04. Even the '04.5 LLY's have some "issues" with cooling. The early '06 LLY's and then the LBZ's were the first ones to address the heating issues while towing very heavy. Some claim the LLY's issue could be fixed easily and was a hit or miss, some had issues, some not. Has the '01 LB7 ever had the injectors replaced? I'd start there, if they were, I'd feel better about it. Does it have any performance mods, issues like that, especially not knowing where it came from and how they treated it could set yourself up for disappointment in the future. Good luck either way. I had one of the 1st Duramax trucks in town. 2001 w/ 10ft flat dump. It went into the shop so many time for little expensive stuff, that I just traded it off before it ran out of the 3year/36k warranty.

I wasn't totally disuaded though. I also have a 2002 & 2004 (LB7) The 02 had the injectors replaced under warranty, and thats about it.

I'd be afraid of a 2001. I pulled up the "CarFax" on it, and its been sold and to the auction a few times since I traded it, and no current owner.
