First question - What would you consider high miles on an 8.1 or a dmax?

 

Second question - What year dmax would you avoid?

 

 

I have located an 04 8.1 that has 89xxx miles and an 03 dmax with 79xxx miles.

As with all vehicles, there is no correct answer for this. I would rather have a 100,000 mile vehicle that has been meticulously maintained, than a 30,000 mile vehicle that nobody even checked oil level on. The problem is finding out what you are getting, used.

 

There is no bad d-max year, though the 8.1 has a reputation for drinking oil, and being an economy pig.

 

Of the 2 you mention, there is no apples way to compare them, since they come from completely unrelated maintenance schedules, regions, driving type, loads...etc

 

Miles is one of the least important factors.

I would suggest geting the diesel for better economy, but as stated, find out which one was better maintained in its past.

If price/options are similar, I would go for the Diesel. It seems that very few gas engines can match the longevity of a Diesel no matter how they are maintained. JMO.
