Do You Like Your 1500hd Crew Cab 4x4?

I'm seriously considering buying a 2006 1500HD Crew Cab 4x4 and wanted to see what some of you have them think of them? What features do you like and dislike the most? Would you buy it again and if not why?

Thanks in advance.

I've only had mine for 2 weeks. As long as you can live with the gas mileage you'll love the truck. I really like my Quadrasteer, I don't think that was an option on a 2006, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway. I think I'll like it even more once I do a few mods.

I have had mine for about a year know and no major problems at all. Mine had 15000 miles on it when i bought it and I have only put about 6000 since then as I have a company car. Overall the truck has been good to me and is a lot more truck then a light duty. I have the LT model with all of the available options except leather(which I would not want anyway). The only option that i have the I do not want is the power sunroof, but the deal I got on the truck I could not complain. I wish the gas mileage was better overall avg. is 12. My biggest problem is that is too long for my garage!!! Overall they are good trucks and it really is a 2500 in a 1500 package.

What is the difference between the 1500HD & 2500HD? I hate the stance of the 1500HD, it just looks like it's been lifted in the rear, and it doesn't look level.

I guess I'll rephrase it this way..... Why would you buy that over the 2500HD?

Everything is different between them except the front suspension & you can get the 6.0 & 4l80e in the 2500hd if you want it. You may just want the 1500hd for a little better MPG.

Mine is only 2wd. drove it for 5 years and has 114,000 miles. now.

it was great truck 6.0l averaged low 14 mpg, my 2008 is only averaging 16.3 mpg.

What all is different? They look like they are on the same frame, same 8-lug wheels, same HD front end, able to get quad-cab with 6.5' bed.

What does the 1500HD offer for suspension, motor, trans and interior options that are different that the 2500HD?

I can not say for sure but I believe the difference between a 2500HD and a 1500HD is the 1500HD has a lighter frame and suspension, as well as the availability of 3.73 gears.

Had choice between 2500 and 2500HD crew cabs back in 2004. Chevy changed the 2500 name to the 1500HD crew cab to avoid confusion in 2005.

Basically they are same truck except the 2500HD have spacers bewteen frame and body to make room for the Allison tranny.

1500HD/2500 crew cabs can be had with only the 6.0L/4speed tranny and available auto-trac transfer case. Could also be had with quadrasteer. 8600 lb / GVWR.

2500HD came with the available 8.1 or 6.6 Duramax and the Allison tranny or the 6 speed manual. No auto-trac transfer case. 9200 lb / GVWR.

Aside from that, same trucks.

I got mine because I don't really need a 3/4 ton payload but I wanted the Crew Cab / 6.5' box.

I also tow quite a bit (light duty) and I don't trust the 1/2 ton's transmission.

1500HD was the perfect fit.

That all makes sense, thanks Daubs. My truck is an '01 Sierra 2500LD. I'm guessing it would be similar to today's 1500HD, Right?

Yep.

(I don't think GM makes the 1500HD in 08. Just 1500, 2500HD's and 3500's)

I like my 2500LD (Same as 1500HD). Looking back I probably would've opted for the 2500HD since I ended up buying a 5th wheel trailer and would've liked the 4.10 gears, but oh well. I pulled a 9,000 lb trailer, 4 adults, and all our stuff to Yellowstone and back this year with mine. No speed demon up the hills, but did it no problem.

Been trouble free so far. Rides like a tank, and gets horses**t gas mileage, but so does the 2500HD.

My $0.02

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
