4x4 Problem

Recently bought a 2004 GMC Envoy with 60,000 miles, vehicle looks and runs excellent, other than the 4 wheel drive. Noticed not long after we bought it, the 4 wheel drive didnt work. The lights all work on the switch and everything but the front wheels just wont pull. Took it back to the dealer and they kept it for days because they couldnt find anything wrong with it, but agreed the front wheels werent pulling, although it seems to act like it is in 4 wheel drive by the way it feels like its geared lower. They reprogrammed the computer and that didnt work. Checked the switch and the actuator and that wasnt the problem either. They said when it was up in the air the front wheels would pull but when on the ground they wouldnt, so they tore into the transfer case. The service manager said the clutches were slipping so they adjusted them and its fixed. Well it was fixed for a few weeks but now its the same problem again. The service dept is pretty shady, so I dont really trust them. Any thoughts or other things to check???

THANKS!!!

Just to add to the situation, I just went out this evening and the 4 wheel drive just worked, but it definitely wasnt working this morning. That really makes things more confusing.... :)

Not that I'm sure I can help but to start checking is that in auto 4wd 4hi or 4lo?

hope you can trust myself and Mike who are GM techs, any ways ,as a tranny ,driveline guy,I can tell you I cannot see how they "adjusted the clutch ",so I don't get it,I had the same thing on an envoy up north and could turn the frt driveshaft when in 4wd ,found the clutch pack was pooped ,so read back the bill to us to see just what the tech wrote, time paid ,if on the receipt

Well I didnt get a bill or anything the first time because we discoverred the problem not long after we purchased it. I figured we would have to pay this time since it has been about a month since the last repair. Once in the shop you could put it in 4x4 with the vehicle in the air and the front wheels would pull. however you could hold the fron tires with your hands and they would no longer pull. They said the problem was the encoder motor and that they replaced it...The 4 wheel drive does work now, hopefully that was the problem???
