Hello to all...

I was just wondering if anyone is familar with rear diff paint peeling, (noticed with less than 10,000 Miles) Is this a lousy paint job or is it getting too hot. All answers appreciated.

Thats why on every new truck I buy the first thing I do is put'em up on a lift at work and scuff-n-paint the axle housing with a nice coat of semi-gloss Black paint.

At least they put some paint on the truck ones,I remember the Camaro's & Caprice's/Impala's when they were new, back in the day,The rear-end housing wasn't painted at all,They were bare metal!

RedRock,I thought you where talking about the rear-end housing itself.....Now that I look at the picture you posted I see your talking about the rear-end housing "cover",I would take in to your dealer, since I assume its still under warranty, and have them either replace it with a new one,or sandblast your existing one and repaint it.

Whats going to happen is eventually that cover will rust to the point where rear-end fluid will seep through and leak, the metal on the covers is not very thick,I stock covers at the dealership for both the 7.5" and 8.5" truck rear-ends because of them rusting through,Especially the area in which I live (SW Pa.) where they use a lot of salt in the wintertime.

Also a new cover from GM will come bare metal,so make sure if they give you a new one its properly scuffed, primed & painted before they put it on your truck.

If you live in an area where they salt the roads alot, that might be part of your problem. Youll want to thoroughly wash under your truck every now and again. And by wash, i mean use a wand, not just drive through a touchless.

No salt here in AZ

I'd still get it replaced or repainted,Besides....I hate looking under a truck and seeing rust like that :P:crackup::lol::thumbs::D

I drove my 1500 2008 Silverado LT off the lot with 9 kliks on it, October 4 last year. It now has just over 1000 kliks on it. Not only is my differential cover rusting, so is the frame in spots, wheels, etc. My $40,000.00 C investment is rusting away in my driveway. And don't get me started on how substandard the paint job is. I've got two very noticeable paint scratches on the roof from removing the snow (Didn't want that thin metal roof to cave in because of the weight) over the winter. My '97 2500 Cheyenne saw 10 winters and summers and had less scratches on the roof. Even though the '97 had 366,000 + kliks that I put on from the time I bought it new with 12 kliks, I'm beginning to wish I just replaced the engine because of the blown head gasket. That '97 was BUILT! The '08 was a retirement gift to myself. From what I've seen for myself, noticed while driving, and read on these forums, this Silverado is now and will continue to be a great disappointment. I just hope it doesn't start to self destruct. I won't be going back to the dealer for anything because my purchasing and after sales experience was abhorrent. That '97 was only in the shop for one thing during the time I owned it. The fuel pump was replaced at just over 300,000 kliks. It was the best, the most reliable, vehicle that I ever owned. A pleasure to drive no matter how bad the roads got in the winter. I miss it. As I took photos of it being towed away, I came close to shedding a tear or two.

Are you Punmax's Grandfather?

WTF is a "Klik?

Does it also "tick" ? :P

Funny, I drove mine through an entire MN winter with salt covering it most of the time and I have zero rust on the frame, undercarriage, bumpers or body. I also use non-touchfree carwashes (maybe once/month?) and I have zero scratches anywhere.

I have had a few minor issues, nothing to get excited about and my dealer experience has been perfect.

I am not saying the new trucks are built with as heavy of sheetmetal as the older ones, but to say these trucks are not built as well overall is simply ignorant. Thin sheet metal is a reality with all brands and something you will either have to accept or just keep driving old trucks. How else do you keep these trucks from weighing 8000 lbs when you have to add airbags, Stability Control and about a million other safety gadgets and such? Welcome to 2008!!!!
