Rear Seal 2500 Hd

Hello, I have an 02 Silverado 2500 HD with an 8.1 and a Allie Transmission. I was rotating the tires today and noticed that there was oil on the drivers rear wheel and the outside of the rotor. Looks like I need a new rear seal, has anybody done this, how hard a job is it. I am thinking about doing this myself any special tools needed? I did a search and could not find anything on the rear seals only the front. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the rear differential cover, pinion seal, or the tranny tail shaft?

if you mean the axel shaft seal, just unbolt it, slide it out a little, wipe the sealing surface of the axel shaft and the axel housing clean, put at bead of permatex around it and bolt it back together.

I just noticed the dreaded oil spot in my garage. My tranny tail shaft seal is starting to leak on my 03 HD (non Allison). Do you know if this repair will work on a tail shaft versus an axle shaft? I would think you would have to have a perfectly even coat of Permatex for this to work. I know from experience that Permatex is usually better than the original, but I've never tried it to compliment a rotating sealing application.

Thanks,

Rob
