Encoder Motor Replacement

Anyone familiar on how to synchronize a replacement encoder motor to the transfer case, without the access of a Tech2? I need to replace the encoder motor on my 2003 burb which is equiped with auto4wd, 2hi, 4hi and 4Lo.

 

Someone proffered that after installing a new encoder motor, to just drive the vehicle around so that the ECM can self sink the encoder. Has anyone tried this or some other method?

i`ve never had the problem of the encoder needing adjustment to read proper position, i don`t even think there adjustable anyways, (anybody can correct me if i`m wrong) the encoder assy is one complete unit, it simply is unbolted (3 bolts)and unhooked (electrical connection) i have changed many without nedding to connect a scanner to refrence location, now if it were the PRNDL switch on the trans that definatley requires a scanner to refrence correct position. so i`m gonna say it a R&R job....

Thanks for the input CDOG. I figured some synchronization would be needed after replacing the encoder, since the transfer case would be in last used mode, 4wd, and new encoder would be 2Hi. TSB calls for placing transfer case into 2Hi before new install; so just wondering.

yeah sorry shoulda told you that i guess, i figured it would be in 2 hi but i guess if it failed it could be anywere! i`d hold up the new unit when the old one is out and use a cresent to place the shift arm in correct position to new unit...
