84 Gmc Smoking Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi. i have an 84 gmc sierra, 305ci, 4 speed manual, and sometimes when i start it up in the morning a lil puff of white smoke comes out, and any time im in high rpm (mostly when in second gear hauling ass) it pours out white smoke but only when hauling ass. this oil leak seems to be comeing out of my rear most passanger side exhaust port and into my long tube headers. but even thow theres alot of smoke my oil level stays the same pretty much and my oil is gold even after 3000 miles. everytime i do my spark plugs there all always covered in oil. the motor runs good just that smoking problem. im thinking its either piston rings or valve stem seals

I had the 4.3-liter V6 in a 1990 K-1500 shortbed that puffed white smoke when starting up cold. I suspect that it needed new valve seals. That motor didn't use an abnormal amount of oil either, even after 140,000 miles

white smoke sounds like coolant, does your level stay good? oil on your plugs is more than likely bad valve seals, had to do them (head gaskets and valve stems on my 80`) once.

OH hey just curious does your exhasut smell like burnt syrup? not that its an afridesiac but it means your burning coolant.

Valve seals are probably bad. It's to be expected on something that old, as I'm sure they've never been done. They simply wear out over time, they do it on any engine. I *think* they can be done w/o removing the head.

+1 If its smoke on hard acceleration, its the valve stem seals. Yes they can be changed without removing the heads.
