I've googled around this p0440 code after going to advanced auto and finding out its a EVAP emission malfunction. But I'm guessing you already knew that and so have I learned. Anyways, so the story goes that I recently had the ignition wiring replaced (the engine one day just stoped running, and the lights in the dash wouldn't work, but the starter worked and radio and such). At the same time I had the fuel pump assembly replaced (aftermarket, from advanced auto). Car ran fine for a few days, then the check engine light came on and I was at square one again. Oh, and when it came on, I popped to hood to see if there was anything obvious and I found the tube between the air intake and pcv valve was out, so naturally I put it back together, as well as a small hose that was dry rotted. Had that replaced. So... after pulling the negative off the battery and driving the truck around for about 50 miles or so.. lights back on. What now? Could it be the fuel pump is A. Faulty or B. installed incorrectly or C. ......? THANK YOU!

p.s. bought the truck for 500, ran fine for 3 months, then the ish hit the fan... 132,000 miles isn't bad for a 96 s-10 4 banger.

Evap codes don't deal with the fuel pump. it is one of the following:

a. gas cap is loose. Tighten at least 3 clicks.

b. EVAP purge solenoid is shot.

c. EVAP purge canister has a problem.

d. EVAP system blockage, fuel fumes are not returning to the tank as they should be.

e. Some other issue with the EVAP system.

Generally, an EVAP code means there's something wrong with the evap system.

While Evap codes do not deal with the fuel pump, if one was just installed some evap lines would have been removed to get the pump out. Crawl around underneath and see if anything looks disconnected. I can't off the top of my head picture what is routed where on a 96S truck so I don't know what specifically to look for other than the evap vent being electrically disconnected or one of the hoses/lines disconnected. Post back if you don't find anything under there and we can point at a few more specifics.

Thanks for the quick reply guys! Re-tightened the gas cap and took a peek under the car by the gas tank. No wires or hoses seem out of place.... Is this something that I could deal without and the truck would run fine, or will it eat gas mileage or leave me stranded down the road? The left turn signal is starting to stay on, even if I turn on the right one and make a right or left turn. I'm about to just sell the beast.

Will it EAT gas mileage, No but the evap system is designed to capture fuel vapor and burn it instead of letting it vent. It will let gas escape, especially in the summer months. How much fuel is lost is just dependant on how hot it is and hot gas evaporates pretty quick.

I just removed the bed and I don't see anything obviously wrong, however one of the lines that runs from the fuel pump labeled "A" (the other two are labeled "F" and "R") seems to be a little bit loose. Not sure if this line is also vacuum dependent. The canister seems to be in good shape. Someone suggested the control unit be replaced? Is there anything else I can check for? Thanks!
