I've searched the boards and determined that I want:

3" Performance Accessories Body Lift

285/75/16 Tires

Magnaflow #12259 muffler SI/SO

with 4" tip (not sure which one)

True Flow air intake (just a filter and tube)

Intake

I should be getting the intake today. I've heard installation is pretty easy. No questions as of yet

Muffler w/Tip

-Is it cheaper to buy the muffler and have it installed, or just go to a muffler shop that sells magnaflows and do it all at once? (I probably won't be installing it myself, although, it is a possiblity).

-I have no idea what tip to get. Do tips even make a difference in sound? I see double walled this, single that, what's the difference?

Body Lift and Tires

-Will my tow hooks still be usable after installing the Performance Accessories lift?

-Can I do this lift without a leveling kit or torsion bar crank? (I like the raked look)

-I've heard talk that the airbag sensors will be exposed, is this true?

-What kinds of places do the install? I'm pretty sure I don't know of any "Truck Accessory" shops around.

-How much will the tires affect my speedo? More importantly, will the larger tires cause excessive wear on my suspension components?

I'll try to answer as much as I can...

Depending on shipping costs, it would probably be cheaper to buy the muffler and bring it to an exhaust shop.

They make a slight difference, but the muffler is the most important thing.

Body Lift and Tires

-Will my tow hooks still be usable after installing the Performance Accessories lift?\

For the tow hooks to be usable, you will have to trim the lower valance.

-Can I do this lift without a leveling kit or torsion bar crank? (I like the raked look)

Body lift has absolutely nothing to do with the suspension, so you can crank if you want, or just leave it alone if you want the raked look.

-I've heard talk that the airbag sensors will be exposed, is this true?

Can't help you with that one

-What kinds of places do the install? I'm pretty sure I don't know of any "Truck Accessory" shops around.

A 4x4 shop would be a good place to start, the best thing is to just call around, and try to talk to people in the area.

-How much will the tires affect my speedo?

Use the tire calculator to see how much the speedo will be off: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

More importantly, will the larger tires cause excessive wear on my suspension components?

285s aren't large enough to cause any extra wear.

thanks, I figured I could find it cheaper online, but I just liked the convenience of getting it all taken care of at one place

Okay, that's what common sense was telling me, the tip is just for looks, not really affecting any kind of sound

Also, thanks for the replies on these questions. The only thing that concerns me is the airbag sensors now.

And as an update, the true flow air intake isn't installed yet because my UPS driver is a lazy P.O.S. and didn't feel like walking down my driveway to drop the package off at the door. Instead, he held the package for awhile, standing outside his truck at the top of the driveway and then decided it wasn't worth his time. So he took it back to the depot and listed it as "ERROR in routing information"

which is basically "I was too lazy to walk 100 ft from the road to the house"

(my dad witnessed all this, then told me about it when I got home)

okay, first off, BUMP

second, I've decided it's cheaper to buy the muffler first then take to a place to get it installed.

All the local muffler shops are quoting around $200 for parts and labor.

The cheapest I can find the muffler online for is $86.

Does anyone know of a good place to buy muffler's online?

I went with summit racing. competitive price and ships fast, you might be able to find it cheaper on ebay...but then you don't get the neat-o summit racing stickers!

+1

Summit always ships fast, ships the right part, gives you a nice big catalog for the bathroom, and a page of stickers. God I love stickers. (just not on the truck)

They also gave me a hat once too. How can you not love a company that gives you a free hat?

Thanks guys, I'll go with Summit Racing.

My mind's made up on the muffler, now the only question I have is for the tip.

I'm between either the 35116 12" Rolled Edge or the 35107 12" Slash cut.

what's the difference besides the edge? I mean, does it actually make a difference in sound or just looks?

Also, I've heard somewhere that the exhaust pipes from the factory are stainless. Is this true with the '02s? I'm just seeing a problem when I take the muffler and tip in to get welded on if my stock pipes aren't stainless.

thanks again!

PS: I installed the TruFlow Air Intake last Thursday. Installation was a breeze, and it looks pretty nice under the hood. Its too early to tell if it has helped mileage yet, but I have noticed a smoother sound coming from under the hood when I step on it (which also means my mileage numbers won't be that great on this tank)

TO answer your question about the tips, the rolled and slashed are really just for looks. Personally I would go with rolled with double walled (only because it will last longer than single walled and for the rolled look)

Every exhaust from the factory is stainless, but if I remember correctly, the factory is 304 stainless and the aftermarket is usually 409 (304 is usually crapper than 409 stainless steel)

Slash cuts are usually pretty nice.... especially on a pretty much stock exhaust... thats what i did on mine i got a new muffler and then i cut the tailpipe about 6 inches shorter and put the tip on... its looks really nice.. i also painted the exhaust black all the way up to the muffler so all you see is a nice shiny stainless tip :jester:

Yup, rolled edge/slash cut is just for looks. I like the looks of the rolled edge tips better.

You guys weren't kidding.

I ordered the magnaflow muffler from Summit Racing this morning and in less than an hour its status went from : Pending to Processed to Shipped

Got the muffler installed this morning.

I'm pretty happy with it. It is quieter at idle then I expected, which is okay. I didn't want anything too crazy anyway.

There is some drone on the highway, though. I've read a lot about people with this setup and they said there was no drone whatsoever. It's not unbearable or anything, it just sounds like an aftermarket exhaust.

I doubt pics would do anyone any good. I didn't get a tip or anything, just a straight up muffler replacement. I'll try and post some sound clips later tonight.

ps: I'm hooked on Summit racing. I ordered the muffler around 9am tuesday and received it at my doorstep 11am Wednesday. $100 for the muffler, $50 for installation. Oh yeah, I got the free hat too
