1995 Gmc 2500 Diesel Transmission

I have a 1995 Diesel Vin F 6.5 L, C2500, 4Wd, Auto Transmission 4L80-E.

In the morning when I travel, the transmisson shifts just fine. I can leave the vehicle sit for a couple of hours and when driving, the transmission stays in first but does not stay in first when coasting, when coasting it is like it is in neutral. The transmission was rebuilt a year ago. It has had a history of this type of transmission trouble.

Sometimes when it is acting up like this, it will surge and seem to "freewheel" without the truck increasing in speed. What is happening?
