Whats Up With Gm And Power Programmers

I was just told by my local 4x4 store; that, GM has a new computer that can look back 10 flashes, to see if you have had a program loaded! I'm looking at getting one to adjust for my 285 tires, and if this is true; is their a way to send a stock flash to it 10 times or more? whats up!!!?? PS Which power programmer is worth the money?

If i was you and most any body else is going to tell you to get a custom tune. power programmer is around 400 custom tune with a set of PCM's and TCM's from blackbear 420 give or take you will be much more satisfied and you can just switch the computers over and the dealer is not the wiser. Just my 2cents

Tyler, keep in mind he has a Duramax. GM does have software that can see the previous 10 program codes. They are looking at the diesels due to the fact they are easy to tune and get 100+ HP without any add'l mods. Many people are tuning their diesels without beefing up the rest of the drivetrain and are expecting GM to pay for it when they explode. Gasser tunes typically only add 20-30 HP and are not nearly as dangerous as diesel tunes.

 

I am not even sure Justin (BLackbear) tunes diesels?

It's not a new computer and it's not to scare you. The tech 2 will go back at least 10 programs and more can be pulled out if you know what to do. No one is going to void a power train warranty for recal to make up for the variation in tire size. If a suspension problem comes up maybe but probably not if your even a little cool with your dealer.

I have been trying to do some home work on the new truck and so far it has become a pretty good lesson. If I put a programmer on and flashed it 15 times would that get ride of the power tune ( I really just want a fuel and speedO tune not a bunch of horse power) that would show up on the GM computer? I have LS1 edit on my zo6 and I cant get my vette anywhere close to the dealershipThey seem to want to re flash it every time I take it in.

 

 

Have y'all every heard this?

I was told by a service tech that I could call GM and talk to a real person; and, they would sell me a code that I could take up to the service dept; and with that code they were able to reset my speedo and calibrate for my tires. Any truth to that?

It's called a VCI but I don't have a clue who a customer would call to get one. We can call with specs and basically get a program that makes the specs work but it takes time to get it done and time is money. I know you don't want to hear that but it is what it is. I wish I could tell customers who to call to get a VCI (because I'm pretty sure that programmer is in India and no matter what I charge it always seems like it takes more time than what is being paid for) but in order to get one I have to give my name and dealer code so I don't know how a customer would go about getting one.

I forgot to add that the problem with this is if there is a problem that requires a reflash any oe reflash will over write the VCI and a new one will need to be made up to include the fix for the problem and the old calibrations togeather (more money).

GM/dealer can use a Tech 2 to change tire sizes, but only if it's a supported GM tire size for your vehicle. If your truck cam with 245's, your dealer could change that to a 265's if you wanted to change to that size. But, 285's aren't, so, you are left with Aftermarket options. I took my DPF off at 2500 miles, just at 10K miles now, no problems with anything. Love the truck even more. The DPF is notorious to clog with aftermarket programmers, even if they "say" it's designed not to clog, it can and will given the right situation. For the $$ to change just tire size in an LMM, can't go wrong with Quad Stealth 2. All the options you listed, plus you can load DPF tunes if you want to keep the DPF or just download off their website the "NO DPF" tunes and can just as easily go back to stock. Very user friendly. Chris

GM is being very "by-the-book" lately with their warranty work. I had some trans shifting issues and the dealership (that I thought I had a relationship with) denied me any driveline warranty work due to the fact that I am running 305-50-20 tires in lieu of the stock 265-70-17 tires that came on the truck. Even though these tires are only 3/10 of an inch taller than the stockers, they told me that the tires were a non stock item and not available from the factory in that size, so GM will not even consider any warranty work on driveline issues as long as I have these tires on my truck. No gray area - just black and white.

 

I called GM and told them about the dealership and I was told that since my wheels and tires are non-stock, that could be the culprit of my trans shifting issues and therefore will not be warranted. I told them that I feel the problem is in the shifting programming not anything mechanical. They repeated, unless I return my vehilce to way it was sold (with the stock wheels and tires), they will deny me any driveline warranty work.

 

If I had 37" or 40" tires I could understand their stance, but my tires are only 3/10" taller than stock - I'm sure there is more variance from tire manufacturer to tire manufacturer of the same size of tires than there is with my tires.

 

I did get the them to replace the trans, but it continued to shift the same way; which goes to show if they had mechanics instead of technicians who take their cues from GM bean counters, they could have worked on the shifting programming and save money on the trans. I called GM and told them of the situation and they told me that they only download factory approved programs and they don't provide any "specialized programming for personalized tastes".

 

The bottom line is if you do any tweaking to your truck, make sure you return it to stock when you bring it in for any warranty work.

Get a quadzilla stealth2 or PPE programmer.

 

Both are good but for very different budgets

 

If your just gonna adjust for 285 have your dealer do it.

 

If you want a tune...either one will be good.

The 285 tire size is a non-supported size and GM will only reprogram sizes they support and it will cost $160. It's high because it is personalized to your VIN#.

Thanks for the input. The jury's still out on which tuner and what to do about on the tires. I've been working on other stuff and haven't had the chance to focus on the truck. Sucks
