Ticking/knocking Coming From Engine Or Trans ?

Need help, Ive got an 05 Gmc Sierra crew 5.3l 75k mi. Started it up one morning and heard clunking/ticking (sounded like a bad belt/tensioner almost or exhaust leak, niether though).

Its there at idle and speeds up with acceleration sounds like its coming from lower rear of engine or front of trans. Took it to the dealer and they said 99% sure it was a cracked flywheel but couldnt tell without pulling the trans $1300. Anyone have any ideas/hear of this?? All help is greatly appreciated How fun is it to pull a trans on one of these?

thanks

I am not a Tech but in the Auto Parts industry. I have never heard of a flywheel cracking on a 5.3 altough I am sure it could happen. I would think they could remove the inspection plug on the belle housing and see or hear enough to tell if the flywheel was cracked.

I would say pulling the trans is not a big deal if it is a 2 WD. Maybe some of the Techs on hear will chime in to help you.

Thanks for the info, it's a 4x4. I did crawl under it and spent about an hour going through it with the inspection plates off, but you can only see the lower half of the flywheel and nothing towards the center. Thanks for the info.
