Stock Bumper Tech

Anyone have knowledge of stock rear bumpers and usage across different models, year ranges, etc?

 

Specifically, I have an '02 2500HD and need a new rear bumper. Can I use a half-ton bumper? If so, which model years would be a bolt-on? Thanks for any insight.

Any '99-'02 should work but you may need to stay with the HD as I'm not sure the tall frame extends the whole way to the rear which may not allow a 1/2 ton bumper to work.

The taller HD frame rails do extend all the way back, ie, they don't neck down. However, it appears the bumper brackets that bolt inside the frame rails are only about half as tall. I'd bet all the bumpers across the model range are about the same, but would really like some confirmation before I drop any coin on one.
