Painting The Bodyside Molding

The paint on my bodyside moldings is starting to show wear. I plan on repainting them myself. What steps should I take in the process to achieve the best results? What else will I need besides a spray can of dark grey metallic paint and clearcoat?

Rough and fine grit sand paper, some 3M tape painters tape if you're not planning on pulling them off first, or some 3M adhesive tape if you are.
