Brake Controller/power Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi, new to the forum posting but have lurked before. I did a search and read a bunch of previous posts on this subject but nothing suggested on those posts has worked. I have a 03 1500HD with factory towing package and I have installed a new brake controller with factory style harness and I have no power to the brake controller (no light on controller). I have checked under the hood and I have both a 40 amp and 30 amp fuse on the #1 and #2 posts and I do have power at those posts. There were fuses inplace but I replaced them with new ones to make sure. I have removed the plug at the back of the truck and checked for corrosion and found none. This truck looks like it had a brake controller in it before so I am frustrated at this point. I have also exchanged the brake controller for a new one just to make sure I did not have a bad unit. Any suggestions are appreciated.

thanks

Scott

Are you sure you have the right harness. They switched in 2003. 1999-2002 use one pigtail harness and 2003 up use a different one. Also there is a fuse in the interior fuse box for the brake controller power.

I do have the correct harness for my year and yes I do have the fuse for the brake controller installed (brand new).

i used to work at a hitch shop and we had about 3-4 truck's come in they were new and the brake control circuit in the truck was dead ,and had to run a seperate fused 12 volt wire from the controler to the plug .evdently this has happened before .

old dog that is what is seems is going on with my truck, there is no power at the factory panel plug under the dash but I have power at the fuse box under the hood. Is there an easy way at run that seperate fused wire? Can I run it from the post on the under hood fuse panel/box or is there something accesible under the dash?

There is a second fuse in the fuse block in the cab of the truck as well. A friend of mine had a trailer with crappy wiring and it blew that few when I hooked up to it.

just run the blue brake wire straight from the controler through the fire wall (find a grommet or a boot to go through )with a 40 amp circuit breaker back to the plug .i assume it is a add on plug !if it is factory find the blue wire for for the brake function and connect to it .when you checked for power is there power to the control wire connection ?if not run a wire with a 40 amp curcuit breaker in the cab to the control .

Problem ended up being that the curt adapter I bought was not wired correctly for the connection between the controller and the adapter. Should of checked that kind of stuff first.
