2020 Silverado Accessories Wiring Help Needed
Transient replied to Transient's topic in Audio, Electronics & Software
You stated switch 2 is both 30 amp and 20 amp. Did you mean switch 1 & 2 are 30 amp and switches 3-5 are 20 amp? Unless I email you the attachment I have of the Baja Designs wiring diagram, what I provided in the original post is the best I can do. I'm sorry. It's just a screen shot of what I have in my email. 2020 Silverado Accessories Wiring Help Needed
Transient replied to Transient's topic in Audio, Electronics & Software
I'm sorry. I made a mistake in my post. I said I connected the black wire to 966 (switch 2), green wire to 967 (switch 3), and the black wire to a ground. What I should've said was the white wire to 966. Both the white and green wires were connected via quick slice connectors provided by Baja Designs. Here's a link to the actual wire harness. The picture is missing the quick slice connectors on the end of the green and white wires, but they were already attached when I received the harness. https://www.bajadesigns.com/products/ford-upfitter-wiring-harness-onx6-s8.asp Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -
I have a 2020 Silverado Trail Boss. When I bought it I ordered the GM Accessories Sport Bar and had the dealership wire it into the truck. Several weeks later I was able to afford the light bar sold through GM Accessories, but it's made by Baja Designs. Unlike the previous generation of Silverados, this setup doesn't come with a new headlight switch for the dash. Instead they utilized a 2nd key fob. I wasn't happy about this, and decided I wanted a switch. I thought it would be a good idea to use the GM Upfitter auxiliary switches. Talking to Baja Designs they said I'd need to swap the remote control receiver box in the wire harness for another harness that they have in stock because Ford trucks use the same lights and install to the auxiliary switches. I bought the harness, and it was shipped for only $15 total. I then also ordered the 9L7 GM Upfitter switches and started discussing with Baja Designs how this light would work, and the difference in functions between the key fob and a switch. Unlike with a key fob, there's 2 settings. Full light, and low (75%) light. According to the guy I was talking to, full light requires only 1 switch, and requires more than 25 amps (but less than 30 amps). Low light needs less than 25 amps, but requires a 2nd switch and a ground. It was decided the light bar would be installed to switches 2 and 3, and the work commenced. It didn't take long to discover problems, such as the amount of cable being pulled through the firewall, plugs not matching up (both the lightbar and new harness that was ran to the Upfitter switch were female weatherpack), etc. I switched the weatherpack connector from the remote signal receiver to the new harness. I thought I'd overcome every obstacle until it came time to start the engine. *Click*. That was all I got from my truck when I pushed the ignition button. After going through some troubleshooting I figured the issue is a weak battery. I managed to get a jump start, and went for a drive, eventuality ending up at the batting cages so my son could practice. After batting practice we loaded up into the truck and tried to start it. *Click* was all we heard again, and the wait for roadside assistance began a 2nd time. I'm a bit frustrated, and clearly I'm over my head. After discussing the matter with somebody they told me I need a relay. I'm attaching the diagram. If anybody knows exactly what this is called, a link with a part number, etc it would be greatly appreciated. I'm also attaching pics of the 9L7 switches electrical diagram, and the wiring diagram Baja Designs sent me. On page 1 of the GM Upfitter schematic I connected the black wire to wire 966 (grey/black) using a quick slice Baja Designs supplied. Same was done to the green wire, but it's connected to 967 (brown/white, iirc). I ran black to a bolt on the body to ground it. Did I do everything correctly? If not, what did I screw up on? Somebody has already told me I need a relay, and linked me to it, but I can't seem to find an actual product like the drawing. Do I avidly need the relay? What exactly is it? Where can I find it? How do I connect it? Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Please ask any questions you may have. I'd really like to get my truck back in the road. It's a fun truck to drive. Wearing 2 makes doesn't make sense, but taking a handkerchief that's folded in half and tying it around your head so it's used as a mask makes a lot of sense. Confusing times we're living in nowadays. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -

Let's install the "upfitter switches"
Transient replied to blamkin86's topic in Modifications & Accessories
Thanks for responding. I checked. Everything was connected. I'm OCD about making sure things are "perfect" and check everything multiple times while doing the work. That's part of the reason I didn't finish until today even though I started on Thursday. Furthermore, I tried jumpstarting with my wife's Traverse. That was unsuccessful. OnStar sent a roadside assistance person to me. They diagnosed the battery as weak, but not damaged. Initially placed their jump box on the battery and had the same result of not starting. Waited a few minutes on the box and it slowly cranked and came to life. Drove it around for over 45 minutes. We'll see if it starts up again soon. In other news, the lights on the auxiliary switches light up when pressed, but my light bar is not lighting up. Looks like I have more work to do. Update: After the 45 minute drive, which was a mix of freeway, surface roads, and a Burger King drive thru, I parked my truck at the batting cages so my son could get some hitting in. When we climbed back into the truck it wouldn't start up. The saga continues... Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -

Transient replied to blamkin86's topic in Modifications & Accessories
Just completed the install, and wired in my auxiliary lights. Now my truck won't start. Won't even attempt to crank. Everything looks fine. Nothing unusual showing up. Hit the OnStar and they're not showing anything unusual. They said I'm not locked out of my truck. Using my wife car to try a jump start. Same result. Battery gauge looks good. Anybody have a clue as to what could be happening here? Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -
Just a guess, but looking at the fuel economy numbers might help Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

Thank you! I read through it. During a break in the rain I went outside and looked for the plug. Found it, but removing the fuse block like that thread suggested did nothing to help. Interior is put back together. Spent the evening changing a weatherpack terminal on one of the wire harnesses in going to connect to 2 of the switches. No rain tomorrow, so I'm going to work under the hood and get the wiring finished up. I need to run 2 harnesses through the firewall and plug them in, then work at the battery. Otherwise, the cable are already fitted and installed under the hood from Thursday's time spent on the truck. If this works, I think this will be the first T1 with the GM Accessories light bar installed to switches instead of a remote key fob.

5.3l how many miles before rebuild?
Transient replied to Jonathan Barker's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
I had a 2007 Tahoe LS with a cast iron 5.3 with AFM (formerly known as Displacement on Demand). GM had the dealership do their things to help with oil consumption, but it ultimately failed me. Only had 98k on the odometer, but was about 6 months out of warranty. My wife, son, and I were literally stranded in the middle of Wyoming in September. Got a tow to Laramie where a Chevy dealership was located. They called GM and tried to get GM to help, but we ultimately got told to get bent due to being out of warranty by 6 months. The military wasn't going to allow us the needed time to replace the engine, which had to be brought from Colorado, so we bought a 2012 Malibu LS and crammed every single inch of that car with what we had in the Tahoe. I drove all night to get to our destination in Chicagoland. This experience left a very bitter taste in my mouth, and is always heavily considered when I am looking for a new vehicle. This time around I went with Chevy over Ram and Toyota hoping it wouldn't be a repeat of what happened back then. I guess only time will tell. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -
GM to go totally electric in 2035. Thoughts?
Transient replied to jlong1984's topic in 2019-2026 Silverado 1500 & Sierra 1500
Iirc, it would also make Iceland the world's next superpower. I recall reading many years ago that 0.33% of the world's hydrogen is enough to completely sustain everybody and everything for over 300 years. The real question is, with GM and Ford working with BMW on hydrogen fuel cell technology, even putting test mules in fleets like small busses with supercharged V10 engines, "What happened that caused them to turn so heavily to EVs?" 10 speed transmissions on trail bosses

I've driven I40 from I85 to the state line. I concur the 10-speed handled it well. I have a 6.2 though, lol. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -
Here's another question: Can the RV handle the weight of towing a T1? I have a neighbor with a class C that tows a 2-door Wrangler. Says he close to max. Might need a B or an A. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

Wankels are different from conventional engines. Iirc, if you didn't drive them the oil seals would dry up. Had down the road and the engine is toast. I saw many RX7s that sat in a garage during the winter and had the engine rebuilt during the summer. I believe this issue was fixed on the RX8. I always wanted an RX8 so I could mod it for racing. Not cheap to build, which is why I didn't get one. Couldn't afford it. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

What happens when water that leaks through the back window comes into contact with electricity? Yep, GM has a lot to fix before they can go full electric. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -

You can no longer ride a horse from sea to sea? When did this happen? Not being sarcastic. You can still legally ride a horse from sea to sea. You just have more things/laws that you need to be aware of. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -
Let's install the "upfitter switches"
Transient replied to blamkin86's topic in Modifications & Accessories
I tried ordering the kit for my truck (jet black with push button start) through 3 online sources and my dealer. All 3 online sources canceled my order due to backorder status. When I attempted to order through my dealer they informed me the kit is on indefinite backorder. I then ordered all the pieces individually, and it did cost more, but I got everything in the kit infusing the infamous 2 screws. Started the install yesterday. Ran into a bunch of headaches trying to figure out how to disassemble the dash to install the new knee bolster, but got it figured out. Right now I'm doing this to fix a problem with another accessory GM sells. For the new trucks the light bar from Baja Designs that installs onto the sport bar doesn't get a new switch for the dash, unlike the last generation of trucks. Instead they give you a key fob to control the light bar. I already ran into a problem where if the battery in the key fob gets low it won't turn off/on the light bar. Fortunately, the remote control box is easily replaceable, and Baja Designs makes a wire harness to use the upfitter switches for controlling the light bar. It's actuality something they made for Ford. Using the harness you can either have full lighting all the time or 75% lighting. Full lighting is more than 25 amps, so that'll go on switches 1 or 2. 75% lighting is less than 25 amps, so that'll use switches 3, 4, or 5. I'm planning on using switches 2 and 3 to keep it simple. Btw, this install is being done on a 1500, therefore confirmed the 9L7 package will work on the half ton trucks. Thank you for the great write up! One recommendation: I used fish tape that I bought at Harbor Freight for $10 to run my wires through the firewall. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -
Manual Seats vs Power Seats

My wife has her car, and I have mine. She likes the power of the truck (6.2), but hates the size. Memory 2 in her car is my settings. That's because I'm expected to maintain it for her, and that sometimes involves a drive. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -

You'll love the crew cab. I'm stuffing 3 kids back there, and none of them are whining about lack of space. Ages are 3, 6, and 10. The 2 younger ones are obviously in car seats. My wife is getting ready to deploy in a few months. She's Navy. I'm a veteran that was demoted to dependa via marriage. I met her after getting out of the Marines. We hat married 2 years later. 3 years after that she joined. Which branch are you in? Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk -
Alright, so I'm having some fun with this. Sarcasm implied. Installing the upfitter switches is fairly easy. Getting started is the hard part. Taking apart the dash in the right order to get the knee bolster out is a PITA. I also managed to break 2 red lock retainer clips on the plugs after disengaging them. Their fault for being in the way, and for being so weak when my fat fingers were trying to press down in the tabs that keep the plugs in their sockets. Oh well. Ran into a few problems. Only 1 is relevant to this thread. I can't find the female plug for the 14-pin connector that comes from the fuse box that I mounted for the switches. Out of frustration I stopped searching and started working on the wiring under the hood. If anybody can help with identifying where the 14-pin plug is, I'd be greatly appreciative. I can't work on this project Friday due to rain, so I'm hoping somebody will post a pic of info before I can finish this project Saturday. My stock ride height truck is too tall and too wide for my garage. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk

I love my Trail Boss, but I have 1 rule. The wife cannot drive it. A loaded Trail Boss does not get memory seats as an option. Imo, get an LTZ or High Country and have the dealer install the Trail Boss lift kit. You'll thank me for it one day. Since it's your truck you can be memory seating 1 and she can be memory seating 2. Program the memory seat setting to her profile and key in the truck and it'll automatically adjust when she unlocks the truck. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
