Fuel Pump Qestion

Three weeks ago while I was on vaction my 2002 2500HD stopped running. I had it towed to a garage in the area. This happened on the weekend so first thing Monday morning they looked at it and told me the fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. This made sense because the truck lost power, would idle but had no power. After about 10 minutes it died totally and would not even start. The mechanic said the fuel pump was an assembly which was in the gas tank and that the tank would have to be dropped and the assembly replaced. I told them to go ahead. The pump module, fuel filter and gasket for the tank came to just over $400. They charged 2.5 hrs labor so I was out the door for around $650. They did the job quickly and came and picked me up when the truck was ready. Being far from home I was happy to get the truck back. I think this garage was honest and I think I was treated fairly.

The truck has run fine since the repair. Today I was under the truck doing an oil change and I noticed under the drivers door in the frame something that looks like a pump?? Does this truck have a pump in the tank and a lift pump in the frame? If this pump quits does the truck still run? Any information about this second pump would be appreciated. Thanks

Agreed. Glad it is fixed. It's a crime what garages charge for parts.

Yep it's the filter on the inside of the frame. You paid a good price for the repair BTW. Little cheaper then what it normally costs. Let's just hope they used a decent replacement pump, cause there are some replacement pumps that are prone to over heating and will cause the vehicle to stall.

The ABS hydraulic pump is also located in that area, that could be what you're looking at. The filter is in the side frame rail and has one line going in and another opposite going out to the engine. The ABS has several metal lines and electrical connections.

Thanks for the replies. The item in the frame has an electrical connection running to it so I assumed it was a pump. Did not think the filter would have an electrical connection. Glad to hear it's not a second pump. The garage told me they put in a GM fuel pump, not an aftermarket. They said the GM was only a few dollars more and the assembly had been redesigned/improved from the orginal. Hopefully it will last for remaining life of the truck.
