4wd Issues

On my dad's 2004 Silverado with 50k on the odometer, he telling me that lately he has been getting random 'Service 4WD' messages on his DIC that go off after a while. Then this morning, I get a call that when he started his truck and put it in gear, it was randomly in 4WD LOW. Since he has never messed with the 4WD system on his new truck yet and didn't know how to get it back into 2, I had to walk him through the simple procedure. It seemed to work flawlessly in switching back to 2 after putting in neutral at a slow rolling speed. However, it is confusing how it got into 4 low in the first place since no one touched the button.

 

Anyway, my first thoughts were the infamous 4WD switch going bad, initially causing the 'Service 4WD' message. However, I'm not sure if I've heard of these trucks switching over to 4WD High or Low on their own without any driver input. Could this also be symptoms of a faulty switch?

 

Hope so, because that is a 5 minute $30 fix I can live with.

I was getting the Service4WD light to. I took my truck in for a cold hard start problem and they traced the light to the 4WD switch on the dashboard. He said I could leave it alone and it could be fine and never have a problem, or I could have the problems you just suggested.. heres some info from my Bill, you should be able to do this yourself I would think....

Holy smokes - $216??? It'll take you all of 15 minutes to replace the part yourself. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can save the $96 as well. Open up the switch and hit each of the solder joints on the board with a bit of new solder, make sure it gets hot enough to flow properly and you're done.

Thats all I did on my '00. Resoldered the terminals, and it was good as new. Not sure where all the labor comes from since it is stupid easy to remove.
