Locker And Axle Questions

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have 2009 GMC Sierra, Crew Cab, All-terrain version, 5.3.

It is my understanding these trucks come with a locker in the rear - There is also the button to turn on and off traction control. Could anyone give me a better understanding of what type of locker is in the rear, and how it works with the traction control button?

Also, I would like to put a powertrax no-slip into the front axle.

Has anyone here put lockers in the front before?

What type of axle is in the front? I don't know which no slip to order.

I did some search and it looks like a locker is not a good idea with the IFS. However, I would think an ARB would be perfect in this situation. Does anyone know if ARB makes a locker for front end IFS on a 1500?

Also, what is the type of axle in the rear of the truck?

How good is the built in locker back there?

I'm wondering if OX LOCKER makes one for the rear axle.

The locker in the rear of these trucks is a G80 locker.. senses a few hundred RPM change from one wheel to the other, then locks.. front end lockers are not an option for these trucks, as they don't have lockout hubs. the truck would steer horrible with a locker,,, and unless you are out to do some serious rock crawling, you don't need a front end locked..

a good set of mud terrain tires will make these trucks very capable for offroading within reason..

No one makes a locker for the front, why... You wouldn't be able to steer it and the stress of trying to would damage many componets.

Of course you can't use a front locker on pavement, unless you have manual hubs. Anyone who has been around off-roading at all knows that.

But for off-roading its great, I've had many trucks and jeeps with front locked. It works great in sand/mud/snow.

I called ARB and they make a front locker for the 2500/3500 series, but not for the 1500.

It is in development however and they expect availability within a few months.

An OX locker would be the best, but they don't have one available.

Does anyone know what the rear axle type is? GM 12 bolt?

I'd like to see if an OX Locker is available for the rear.
