4x4 Elec Switch....broken?

I have an 98 suburban 4x4, does the electronic 4x4 switch light up the entire time to show selected mode of 2wd, auto, 4hi, 4lo? mine will only illuminate when you select a mode , then the light goes out until you select another mode, seems to be working corrrectly otherwise. unsure if it's broken, kinda would like mode to be lit showing mode at all times.

Does the light stay on in 2wd? They should stay lit. It appears you may not be engaging 4wd. I had a 96 s10 Blazer that did this and I replaced the modulator associated with the 4wd system, She worked good after that...
