Starts And Stalls

Hi Friends,

 

I have a problem with my 99 GMC Suburban, 5.7L k1500. Right now it starts and stalls. Sounds like the fuel pump issue I had several years ago. The replacement pump probably has more than 50K miles on it. For about a year or so the fuel gauge has been vibrating. If it had a sound it would sound like it is buzzing the way it vibrates, but there is no sound. It is a small fast movement at the fuel level. I noticed long time ago that when the ignition is turned on the gauge pegs out past the full marker and then goes to the current fuel level.

 

Would the fuel sending device be my problem? I am stuck at work waiting for a ride. The truck wouldn't start yestarday, start and stall, today I put the OBD reader on and there were no codes and it started. Now it won't..

Sounds like the pump again. Did you have it serviced at a dealership or did you do the last one yourself? Of course a pressure test would tell the details.

works and then doesn't sounds like bad connection. Some of the fuel pumps had a connection problem. When you changed it last time, were the connections okay? did you have to replace them (I had to on a car recently because the new pump had a different connector). Did you put a new filter on when you changed it?

... get your fuel pump pressure tested... you need 61-66 psi on this Vortec engine at all times/stages of operation.

 

.. less than 60 psi and you will start to have problems ... like getting stranded somewhere when it won't start.

Maybe you have a passlock/security system issue? If the truck starts then stalls promptly, monitor the security light(top right of gauges)near the speedometer. If the light is flashing or on steady after the engine stalls then it is most likely a passlock related issue IMO.During normal operation the security light should extinguish shortly after the ignition is rotated forward. My gas gauge vibrates (flutters in place) also and has done so for years, obd scanners will not read codes from the theft deterrent module/body control module and I think you need a techII scanner, but the vehicles security light does give a simple system status eg:flashing,solid or extinguised.
