2007 Nbs Transfer Case Stress Crack

I had my truck at the dealers for other warranty issues (mainly battery drain), and I had them perform a standard service plus replace the transfer case fluid. I had no real reason to ask them to do this since I did not meet the "extreme service" requirements in the user manual, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.

It turned out to be a great idea! When the tech went to fill the transfer case he noticed the fluid level was low. When he refilled it he noticed some fluid on the outside. Thinking he had just been sloppy he wiped it off and topped it off again, only to have it leak. On further inspection he found a stress crack in the case. The dealership replaced the case under warranty, noting "material fatigue in case assembly". I do not know exactly where the crack was - this is the best description I have.

So a word of advice - check your transfer case fluid level before your warranty runs out just in case! The dealership were fantastic with this, and neither of us would have necessarily known. I have no idea when the fluid originally leaked since I have never had any drips on the garage floor. The truck is 32 months old with just 4 months left in warranty. Whew!

No pump rub, that was on the 246/263/261 units with the mag case. His truck has the Magna Steyr designed/NPG built NQF. It is an aluminum case. I would guess it was cracked near the front. 2011 HDCS trucks have a larger mounting surface at the front of the TC with more bolts that should prevent this.

Funny........These GM forums are are plastered with the

GM Pump Rub Issue which effects most of the late model

GM pickups. Not to mention that the MAIN part of the case

is alum. while the part that develops the hole is mag.

His truck does not have the pump rub transfer case. In those the aluminum pump tab rubs through the magnesium case. The problem is unique those magnesium case units.

He has this:

Pump rub is a problem on these:

what years had this issue?

I know that 2001 was one of the years. I had my transfer case replaced last year because of this. Was not under warranty either. That was 2K I did not need to spend...

The "pump rub" issue is happening in BOTH the

1/2 AND 3/4 ton trucks...............

Here 6 pages of "pump rub" info. and complaints:

One of MANY threads here alone...................

But what does that have to do with Allan's truck? His transfer case is completely different. The GMT900s have totally different transfer cases. As such post 67 in the aforementioned thread is incorrect.

[quote name='BrockwayMT' But what does that have to do with Allan's truck?

Well really nothing............I just posted it SO YOU WOULD GET YER PANTIES IN A WAD !

BrockwayMT...thanks for posting that useful info. I was wondering about pump rub, so at least I can score that off the list. I just hope that the cause for the stress crack is not a faulty design / weak component because then it could likely occur again when the truck is not under warranty. Time will tell.
