Im looking to put a motor in my 87 monte carlo and want to use the l31 heads, and for $200 more i can get a running motor. Does anyone know if the 96-98 gmt 800's have a block of plate for a mechinical fuel pump like prior 350's and 305's?

The '96-'98 trucks were GMT400's,Not GMT800's.

They do list a blockoff plate in the parts catalog.

Very doubtful. Pretty well every casting I have seen that were OEM installs beyond about the 94 model year no longer had provision for a mechanical pump. Well I guess they still do but they are cast closed with no hole for the pushrod. You can easily add a regulated electric pump setup and forget about the issue though. It's nice to start with an engine with good heads and the roller cam is just a bonus.

Sounds about right,If I remember correctly the last GMT400 truck I had ('97 K1500-10 years ago) had a boss for a mechanical pump, but it was cast closed with no hole like you said.
