Most Efficient Tune Octane

No doubt you could tune for more power with say a 91 vs. a 87 octane fuel. Would it actually increase the mpg by doing that, enough to offset the price of the gas (assuming normal driving), or is it really only worth it if you pull a lot or drive hard? Back in Missouri, Casey's always had the 89 octane same price as 87 Wish they were here.

 

Also, can you re-use these handheld tuners? Like, if I bought a predator and then changed my mind and just wanted a black bear tune, could you sell it after you tried it?

Tuners get locked to your ECM and you have to pay to get them unlocked if you want to sell them.

If you want to do some comparison testing for the different octane levels and tunes, the hand held is the best way to go.

 

Or you can just have your ECM tuned by Blackbear and allow your knock sensors to do they're job and adjust timing for the grade of fuel you put in your truck. Just cause your tuned for 92 doesn't mean you have to run 92...the engine will adjust to the fuel in the tank when it "hears" pinging.

 

I have my ECM tuned for premium...I burn nothing but 94 octane, and its actually cheaper than running 87 was.

On the down side I bought a "new" pro comp accu-pro just to adjust for tire size and it adjusts your shift points, all cables still sealed, I go to try it out yesterday and it says it already has a VIN number and a program on it Hopefully there's some way to undo that. The seller was selling multiple one's, I guess people "return" them after they're done. Great.

yup, drop procomp an e-mail and explain what you have...they are going to charge you, but they can unlock it for you.

I think I'll try to get my money back, it hasn't been that long since I bought it, and put it towards a real tuner I'm sure they can adjust for the tire size. Might just do the black bear thing.

 

Does the adjustment done by the engine not hurt anything, it just adjusts your timing, so you could get it tuned for 93 octane and run 89 all the time and it's pretty well the same as getting tuned for 89 to start with? Hmmmm....

 

I just ran some numbers, it looks like it would need to get 1 more mpg to make up for the higher octane price for 89, 2 mpg for 91 (15 cents jump per grade at $3/gallon roughly).

I have a Wait4Me tune...its a couple years old now, but I got a big increase in MPG...425KM per tank to 550 post tune. A tank of 87 at 425Km costs the same as or less than a tank of 94 at 550KM

With a hypertech or superchips handheld. As long as you return the porgrammer to stock you can take it to another vehicle. I don't know about a diablo as they don't make one for a 7.4L. I bought my superchips handheld used on ebay and it works great. Just my experience

with the diablo predator or trinity, if you restore the original backup stock tune to the vehicle, the unit then becomes unlocked/reset and can be used on another vehicle...

Thanks LEW!! my tunes running strong still! im running a custom 87 Octane (always run 89)DiabLEW tune... i average about 17-18 including freeway...if i reset my DIC i get about 19-20 just straight freeway driving.

Nice thread. I enjoyed reading because I've gathered information. Cars are huge contraptions, but in the event you take it just one step at a time, they truly aren't as scary as they look. A verify motor light indicates that there's at least just one of many difficulties your car is having. Occasionally it is because your mass air flow censor is functioning correctly. If this is not working correctly you will be obtaining very much worse gas mileage and possibly hurting your engine. You may have to replace this, but you may basically just desire to clean it. If you are able to<a title="Basics of the mass air flow sensor switch your oil, this should be basic for you as numerous find this much simpler to change.
