Started Clearing My Headlights

Ive been planning on doing this for awhile, and was just waiting for my HID kit from Xenondepot which ended up taking two weeks to get to me . But anyway, today I pulled the headlights out and started cutting into them. I was thinking about doing a write up but I didnt take pictures throughout the entire process, but I may try and piece something together. Anyway, heres a few pics of it, I replaced teh stock orange bulbs with Silvannia Silverstar clear markers part # 3157/4157 ST and there are two beads of silicon sitting tonight, and will be putting another on in the morning. After I mount the HIDs and get everything back together I'll take more pics.

I cringe every time I see someone on the truck forums cutting open their head lights. You don't have to cut them, simply turn your oven on the lowest setting (mine is 200 degrees), put the headlight assembly in there and let it warm up for 15 - 20 mins. Don't preheat the oven, let the lights warm up with the oven. Then take them out and use a few flat blade screw drivers to pry the lens away from back piece. It's not easy, the black caulking they use is very sticky, but if you take your time it will come apart. Make your mods, then use black rtv in the seams, and press the units back together. No cutting required.

Every place I've seen this is the only way for the 900s, Ive read countless stories about people trying the oven method and it melting their headlights.

yup...thats mine...FYI....could have posted it here but I didnt think you guys were into that. I have done at least 20 sets for people

 

I removed them so GMFS couldnt see them, however the entire how too is on my hard drive

Well while I was trying to position my driver side intoplace, I think I forced it too much and broke a seal on the bottom. OI saw the lense moving a bit in the bottom corner so I applied some more silicon, hopefully that fixes it. I did a water test on them with a hose spraying directly onto the seams and nothing penetrated. Just hoping that patch job I did holds.

Just out of curiousity, why did you removed them so gmfs couldnt see them?

I allways run an extra thin bead between the halves and let that cure for several hours. Then I lay a thick bead and smooth it over that and then I let that cure 24hours. Before install I submerge the lense in water and cheak for leaks.

 

I use clear GE all purpose 100% silicone glue, available at Home Depot.

Ya cutting is not the answer...... I saw this on youtube a while back. I bought a new set of headlamps for my truck. I am going to do this to the new set...

 

 

 

 

 

 

I need a vacuum board. If anybody has experience in building one or where to get them pm me.

 

I also found a supplier for the black gooo glue they use to bond the lamp together.

He just has a table with a hole cut in the center and his shop vac attached to the bottom.

Oven has to be super huge to fit the GMT900 headlights. They are so big they get to close to the elements and melt in no time. I tried one and it made my entire house smell like a meth lab. If you have an old oven in the garage you use for projects then go for it.

 

Cutting is easier and safer for the new trucks imo

I put a thin bead on the lens to seal it to the housing and that sat for about 5 or 6 hrs then i put a thick bead on the outside and let it sit over night, close to about 15 hrs or so, guss I shouldve let it cure longer but its due to rain tonight, so we will see.
