Opinion Needed: Bully Dog, Edge Evolution Hypertech, Or Superchips

I know everyone tends to sway to getting a black bear tune, etc but I'm trying to stay within specs. If I somehow get stuck on the hwy with a warranty failed part I'd like to bring it in no prob. I'm not trying to be stuck, buy a new PCM, or finally get ahold of Blk bear tune to swap it back to stock. It's too muc trouble. Once my truck is out of warranty, then so be it. I don't need anything to help chevy avoid paying for something that legitly screwed up.

With the programmers you can view quite a bit and still reap plenty on benefit. If something goes wrong, just plug it back to stock.

So my question is, what are your opinions on the four? Now, with that in mind, also consider a few friends of mine. I have two people selling two differerent ones. One, a 5

mo old edge evolution that is not the cts or the expensive one. I think it's listed at $450 on their site. I can get this for $275 from him. Or I can get a superchips from the other friend for the same price but is a superhips fabq or whatever, it's the red one and 1 yr old.

What are the diffderences between these 2? Which is better or has more features such as downloadable Internet updates?

With those two in mind is it worth paying full price for a bully dog or a hypertech? Is there muh difference between the two above and these two?

What's your take?

Ok, so were narrowed down to superchips and edge. Why maybe for edge? The screen shows you speed mileage, rpm, etc. You just set what 3 screens you'd like to see.

The superchips is a plug and take off deal. No live screen data...

Well, I've read many mixed reviews on performance gains... thats why. Superchips has TQ management controls where the others done. If your want the "cool" factor of plugging it in.. and leaving it on the dash, then the edge, but if you want good tunes that I know perform, then it's also a good choice. I think the new Cortex does do life data logging and I know Diablo does too.

Oh wow, so it does have torque management? I have heard from others that the black bear tunes offer the torque management and that was an important factor for me to consider.

My question is, what exactly does the torque management do?

Also, on other sites they state I should go with the black bear tune. So when I bring it in to the dealer for warranty work they'll know that I had a programmer as everything will be erased. Others say they have a black box separate from the main computer.

But really, if they do and I put a black bear tune in, then p[lace a blank stock one back in for warranty they'll say " ok, you have a gap of 6mo in your computer"....

So how do either do with warranty work? How does everyone else go about it? Just pay and fix problems as they come along?

Well, Superchips new tuner does have TQ controls from what I've read. What TQ management is.... Is GMs way of protecting the drive train, as well as an effort in improving mpg. It pulls timing between shifts to reduce power. When you take off hard from a stop, the TM pulls timing so you can't spin the wheels, by reducing power. It makes a 400hp truck feel like a 300 hp truck.

As far as Blackbear tune... well alot of people buy a second set of ECM/TCMs for dealer trips. It only takes minutes to swap so it's not all that big of a deal. I originally purchased Diablo and was very happy with the results, but just wanted more so recently I got the BB tune and I'm very happy with it too.

It's your call how you want to handle it. Diablo claims GM can't tell if you've had your program tuned by their tuner, but I don't know if superchips can make that same claim.

Good luck

Ok, I spoke to gm and they stated they got bulletins from all dealerships that they can and wil find out if you hooked a chip to your vehicles no matter if you erase it or not.

My whole problem with black bear is there is no way i'd feel comfortable sending that nice chunk of money to a guy I can never reach be it phone or email...

I know he's busy but damn, either pay a woman minimum wage to answer phones. You know?

Well, emails the best way to get a hold of him.. and I'm sure if you send him one, he'll get back to you pretty quick. His tune is awesome for my truck.

Ok, I have no choice as I already bought the edge. It'll be here MOnday or Tuesday.

Now as far as the tune. I totally respect your opinion and experiences. But hear me out my friend as this is my point of view and reason.

I will admit i did email him once and got a response. The other emails recieved none. But he did state that he'd be out here in Diego in June but I guess from what someone else said is that he won't be here until a later date and time.

OK, so enough about Justin, he'll hear from me soon when I am ready. I got the edge bc I can see valueable info live. That is important to me. Looking at what is going on and my ability to erase codes, etc.

Now, I was told by a buddy tonight that I can actually turn it off but just use it to give you live ratings. Well, once i get the BB tune, I'll use it. I personally do not like being in the dark and depending on others to tell me what might be going wrong. I like my data.

So to me I do not really need that custom of a tune. I mean, I am not like my buddy who installed a turbo on the damn truck or my other friend who installed a super charger. I dont' need all that right now. I have an intake, exhaust, and 35" tires. I'm not racing anyone.

I can program the trannie to loosen up its governing controls like the rev limiter, the trannie torque management, input tire size to correct gauges, etc. Nothing major. I'm not trying to fly to the moon.

Now, once I install some heat under the hood, etc then yea, I'll go for it. I got this programmer from a friend and got it even cheaper. A appx $200 and it's mine. May not be as detailed as Justins but it'll do something and I can see what's going on. Thats' all. As far as the warranty. My buddy at the suspension shop is going to hook me up with a place. He has a huge lifted chevy diesel with a kit made himself with some mean parts, and comepletly race ready. Not a pretty or mildly functional kit, and has his chip and doesn't even bother to take it out. They have worked on his truck no prob. So I'm going to hit that shop up and get to know the folks and call it a day, lol.

Doesn't sound too bad right?

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
