2500 Yukon Xl Smell?

blowin oil

Question

Posted

2005 GMC Yukon XL 2500 8.1 55000 miles. I have noticed that after towing my boat (6000lbs) while unhooking the trailer, there is a strong smell at the rear of the vehicle. It seems to smell like something is getting hot. It doesnt smell like brakes. Any Ideas?

Additionally, yesterday after pulling the boat out of the water up a steep ramp and letting it idle while I wiped the boat off, I pulled on up another long steep hill to the highway and noticed that the trans temp went up to 190-200. It never cracked 200 but is that normal? Truck was in tow/haul mode and 1st gear selected. Never got over 2400 rpms. Out side temp was about 90 with humidity of 65% or so.

I recently purchased the vehicle and have plans to change the trans fluid and filter and rear diff fluid with Amsoil Syn.

Thanks

change the fluids, if the truck has been towing hard its entire life its probably due for new fluids....outside heat will effect operating temps...you can always put a bigger cooler for the trans

So the old fluids are causing the smell?

If you're gonna be towing a lot, as was already said, look into getting a bigger tranny cooler. The fluids might be what's causing the smell.
