$142.78 Bug

Awhile back, I described a car wash incident:

 

Was washing my truck Saturday at the high pressure wash. I had lots of bugs to get off.

 

While spraying the driver outside mirror I noticed one "bug" that was particularly hard to get off. Even when I put the sprayer real close to the "chrome" surface, the darn "bug" would not let go.

 

When I stopped spraying and looked, I found the "bug" was really a chip in the chrome and the closeness of the high pressure spray had caused a bubble about 2.5 inches in diameter to form in the "chrome".

Ordered and received (1) 15062880 Mirror (LH) today from gmpartsdirect.com. Mirror 118.98 + Handling 18.28 + Freight 5.52 = 142.78.

 

Installed in about 15 minutes. Very easy. Transferred round backup mirror using  doublesided carpet tape.  

 

I'm very satisfied with gmpartsdirect.com. I sent an e-mail to them this past monday requesting a stock number. On tuesday, they provided part number and price. Using their standard shipping (UPS ground) I received and installed today, thursday.

Expensive fix

Darn expensive indeed! I thought I would just be able to replace the "chrome" back. It took me quite awhile to finally breakdown and fix it back to original.

 

The thing is, I believe it came from the factory with a defect in the finish, but I could never prove it was'nt from road debris of course.

 

I think the price at my local dealer would have been around $200. I believe in supporting the local economy, but I do draw the line somewhere.

try replacing a signal mirror!  those are VERY expensive

I'm sure you did, but I would have given my dealer the devil to replace it under warranty.

My brother-in-law did the same thing with his new silverado except for it was to the chrome strip on the front grille next to the chevy symbol. We have a really good dealer and the dealer installed a complete new grille, free of charge under warranty. I would ask the dealer to take care of the charges or find a different dealer.

You could always sand & paint to match your truck.

That piece of chrome comes off of the outside rear-view mirror.  For future reference you might be able to order the chrome on the front-side of the mirror separately, but I doubt it.
