Power Source For Maf And Purge Solenoid?

Hi guys, this is my first post, but I use this site often for information. I have a 2001 GMC Savanna 3500, with a 5.7 ®. Codes PO102 and PO443 are present, and even after they are cleared, come back together almost right away. This lead me to believe that they were tied somehow. I checked the pink wires for the MAF and the Purge Solenoid with key on, and have nothing on either one.

I do not have a service manual for this truck (it's on my list), so I am wondering where these two items get power from. Is it possible that there is a driver out in the ECM that controls these. I have no other codes, and the truck runs pretty well, other than the poor fuel mileage, and the fuel smell from the canister.

Thanks very much for any ideas!

Check some of your ECM and that type fuses in your underhood fuse panel.

Yep, I checked the fuses, visually and for continuity. I really was hoping it would be something simple like that! Any other ideas? Thanks!

Wow, I guess I overlooked that one  ! Sparks, that was exactly it. New fuse, cleared codes, and SES light is gone for now. I suppose time will tell if it blew for a reason, right? I have read that an over-active purge solenoid can cause enough draw to blow a fuse, does that sound legit?

One other thing, when the truck is running and I move the MAF connector slightly, the engine bogs slightly. So I obviously need a new end. If the parts store has a pigtail, is it ok to solder-splice one on, or will resistance become a factor on that circuit?

Thanks alot for the replies you guys! :wtf:

Or you could just not "move the MAF connector slightly". And yes it will be fine, that will add negligible resistance.

Well, I'm not worried about me moving the harness, more like the engine/vibration doing it. So, I will replace it anyways. Thanks for the help!

Well, back to the top with this one. After a couple of trouble-free days of driving, the fuse popped again, and the codes are back. Can anyone tell me what else is on this circuit, and where I should start tracking this issue down? Also, if one of the items on the circuit could possibly be a culprit for this (like the purge solenoid), or if it's more likely that it's just grounding somewhere?

Thanks again guys!

P.S.- Tyler- nice 1/4 mile time on your truck! :D

First try upping the fuse ampage by 5 or 10 amps, to see if it's a dead short or a seldom resistance issue.

P.s.- Thanks, I was running stock tune with a 150 shot and a modified supercharger off a 3.8l v-6.

Done- I just put in a 25 for now, and will see what happens! Thanks for the quick reply, man!

Don't ever substitute a larger fuse in a circuit that is having problems.....do you want to make the situation worse? If you're blowing a fuse you have an issue that needs to be dealt with....

5 more amps or even 10, for that matter want hurt a bit, I'm just trying to figure out what kind of short it is. If you think a little bit bigger fuse will hurt, you've been reading too many books and not getting enough real experience. You'd have to go to something like 40 amps to even worry about overheating that wire.

You don't troubleshoot a short by increasing the fuse size.....you've been putting out incorrect information on this site for days and you obviously are pulling it out of your ass.....to the OP, do what you want with your vehicle but be careful who you listen to here.

What damn incorrect info am I putting out? Increasing fuse size to see if it blows a larger fuse is not an uncommon thing to do. I haven't pulled shit out out of my ass! I'm experienced in the field of automobiles, especially electrical systems since I happen to be a computer/electrical engineer.

How about giving another guy the incorrect specs for checking a knock sensor....I'm not getting into a pissing contest w/ you but you are the one that questioned my abilities. You don't troubleshoot a short w/ a larger fuse, you use a meter for that purpose. BTW, I happen to have 25 years of aircraft electrical and avionics experience. I hope you two get it fixed.
