Rust - How Do I Stop It?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just picked up a '94 K1500 (350, auto) and the underside has some rust on it, thanks to all of the salt we have here in the Northeast.  I was wondering what products people have used to stop rust?

Any feedback would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Where I live, there is a guy that will spray the underside of the truck and the insides of the doors with chainsaw "bar oil".  Other places use old motoroil, but IMO used motoroil may contain some acids/corrosives.

By underside, do you mean the floor?

The only real way to stop rust is replace the entire panel. Anything else is just prolonging the inevitable

If the rust is not too bad or deep in the metal, you can try some Naval Jelly, or some other rust remover. When the rust is removed you can have the underside sprayed with an undercoat. This is tar like when applied, but it dries hard, and protects and seals any bare metal that might be exposed. I know this is like a $150 option at the dealer, don't know how much it would cost.

I used POR15 on the underside of my snowmobile trailer and was AMAZED.  You can slop this stuff on right over the rust and it seems to turn it back into steel.  I know...I know, you must think I'm crazy.  They say it forms a chemical reaction with the rust, which I have to believe is true.  This stuff does work wonders though.  It’s a little pricey but you won't be disappointed.  Give it a try, here’s the website.

Thanks for your suggestions, I ordered some products from POR-15 and will let everyone know how it works.  My dad uses oil on his trucks, I just wanted to see if there was something better out there before I went that route.  The rust is basically surface rust on the frame & chassis, the panels are OK...
