Several Maintenance Questions/issues (long)

Hey ya'll,

Its been a while since I've been on here, but I get solid information from people who aren't trying to start drama (can't say this about some other places) so I appreciate those who are willing to help out.

I am having two issues with my 2006 crewcab 1500 silverado that I want to see what ya'll would suggest.

First:

Recently I have started getting a loud popping noise from the front end while turning. I have known that the upper ball joint boots have been torn for a while, but do a good job of greasing to flush out any contaminants. I recently checked the joints for play by jacking up the wheel under the lower control arm and looking for movement while pushing at 12 and 6'o clock on the tire. Everything seems tight. However, when I crank the wheel from one side to the other, it is frequently accompanied with a number of loud pops. This is also usually amplified while articulating the suspension and turning (such as turning into a driveway that goes up). I took the truck to a shop to get it looked at, and they "say" that the ball joints are "fine". However, the noise is unnerving while driving and I don't want to have an accident because of an unforeseen breakage.

Second:

I have posted frequently the noises and issues I've had with my 4l60e. Part of me wishes it would just break so I could get it rebuilt and be done with it. However, the newest issue to the slew of problems happens when I come to a stop. Initially I thought it was a clunk because of the slip yoke, but when I stop, I get a loud clunk from the transmission. However, it doesn't always do it right as I stop. Sometimes I can be at a stop sign, and it doesn't do anything until I let off of the brakes, then I get a clunk. I have noticed also that this is accompanied with a slight engine load (as seen in the tach). I am wondering if this is the transmission slamming down from 2nd into 1st gear before taking off? Would this be indicative of primary clutch failure?

Thanks for any information and bearing with the long post.

I love my truck and would rather push it than drive any other, but these are very annoying and any help in diagnosing the problems would be very much appreciated.

If it is a 2WD, I may have a solution for you. My truck was popping on slow turns, speedbumps, parking garage ramps, dirt roads, ect. I had my ball joints checked and my tie rods replaced, but my 2006 still did it (before and after my RC lift). I fixed the noise I was hearing by removing the crossmember, scraping some undercoating away from the bolt holes, and adding the washers specified in the TSB listed below. The P/N is 11509592 (8 required) and is available through GMPartsDirect, GMPartsGiant, and your local dealer. It took me about 30/45 minutes with a break or two for some water. There is also another TSB that involves adding nylon spacers to the body mounts. I also bought those because the spacers and washers are pretty cheap, but I did not need them after the crossmember work. The only tools I needed were a ratchet, breaker bar, small extension, a couple of metric sockets, and your choice of ramps or jacks. I had replaced the ISS and knew what that clunk felt/sounded like and this was completely different. I could hear it underneath the truck when turning the wheels back and forth from full lock left and right. It was also more of a popping sounds.

Condition

Some customers may comment on a snap or popping-type noise coming from the front of the vehicle. This condition is most apparent during hard left or right turns at low speeds. Going over bumps while turning may also aid in producing this noise.

Correction

Remove the bolt-in front crossmember and add washers using the procedure listed below.

Important: DO NOT slot the mounting holes on the crossmember as stated in previous bulletins. Slotting the holes has been found to be less effective and, in some cases, causes the noise condition to be more prevalent.

  1.
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI.
Remove the mounting nuts, bolts and the front crossmember from the vehicle.
Clean all the undercoating off the crossmember in the area of the mounting holes.
Reinstall the crossmember with the bolts and nuts. On the driver and passenger side, add washer P/N 11509592 (C/K models) or P/N 15567836 (H2), or equivalent hardened washer (see dimensions below), at each bolt head and nut location. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).
  2. Apply an even coat of Anti-Corrosion Coating, P/N 12346501 (in Canada, 10952414), or equivalent, to the crossmember where removed. Overlap the original coating in order to provide an effective corrosion protection.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Thanks for the information! I never would have guessed that... I looked underneath the truck, and I am assuming the front cross member you are talking about is the one that connects basically the rear parts of the LCA's? Does it have the impact struts bolted to it as well? That would make sense that the noise is coming from there, its only when my frame would seem to flex, and occurs sometimes just when the truck is on level ground but I turn the wheels back and forth.

Two additional questions, I am assuming the washers go one between the cross member and the frame on each bolt hole? Is it a tight fit? Also, did you use the recommended corrosion coating that the service bulletin calls for, or if you used something different, what was it?

Thats an inexpensive enough solution that I will gamble with 3 dollars and order the parts today. Hopefully that will solve my problem.

You can buy rubberized undercoating from any local Walmart or parts store. They sell several different brands, but I bought 3M. The washers go on the outside of the crossmember in between the crossmember itself and the bolt/nut end. The crossmember is held on by 6 bolts. The four that your put the washers on and two that are vertical inside holes on the crossmember.
