1989 S-15 Ecm Glitch ?

My 89 S-15 4WD with 4.3L has been mechanically reliable for the 21 years I have owned it.

Yesterday in the rain as I took off from a light the rear tires broke loose, which is not uncommon.

But after that all the way home it would cough everytime I would accelerate. Wasn't sure if I would get home, uphill all the way. No Service Engine Soon light.

Kind of reminded me of a bad plug wire. Also thought might have got water in gas. I had a bottle of HEET so I dumped that in. Also seemed more of an under load problem, or at least more noticeable.

Ran it for awhile in my driveway hoping it would clear up but it didn't. During that time the Serivice Engine Soon light came on and stayed on.

Thought I found something. Checked the code and it was a 24 to do with VSS. It says something about being able to set a code 24 by revving engine in nuetral, tires not turning to get a reference for speed.

For lack of any other ideas I pulled the ECM fuse for a minute, plugged it back in and seemed okay.

Took it, and my cell phone , for a 10 mile ride up and down the hills and it didn't miss a beat.

There were no other codes and it looks like I set the 24 myself.

Think the tires slipping could have upset the ECM and a reboot cleared it? Maybe water in the gas??

Anything else I should be looking at?

If while sitting in park and you get a VSS code check the NSS for being defective or out of adjustment, the ECM is seeing the vehicle in gear and no VSS input. Do a basic tuneup rotor,cap,plugs,wires & fuel filter to resolve the miss and poor performance.

It is time for a tune up so I will see if that helps.

And I was thinking I did rev it a little in gear to see how bad it was under load, so maybe that set the VSS Code.

Still wondering why it cleared up after the "reboot". Probably one of those temporary electrical "phenomenons".
