Braking Shimmy/shake At Light Push

Recommended Posts

So yesterday I finally got my new rims and tires installed on my pickup, 285/60/18's. That was after I had installed my Zone body lift over Thanksgiving. All went well with the mounting balancing. Today driving home from work I could feel a nasty shake or shimmy coming on when I applied the brakes lightly. It would vibrate throughout the whole pickup. Then when I would slam on the brakes it wasn't near as bad but you could tell it was still present. What gives? Or what should I do to fix the issue? My pickup only has 38,000 miles on it. Any good ideas would be appreciated! Thanks in advance

I don't believe they ever took the rotors off. I stood there and watched them throughout the whole process too. So what else do you think it is?

well many cars I've worked on, from the factory will have 1 or 2 clips on the rotors, they are used to hold the rotors on the car during assembly, and the OEM wheels are designed to fit around these clips..

where after market wheels won't have the recessed area for those clips, therefore the aftermarket wheels won't sit completely flush against the rotors as they should because the clips are in the way.. and if they are only on 1 or 2 of the lugs, then the wheel sits a bit lopsided (by 1 or 2 mm).

I can't say 100% this is the issue, but it could very well, be..

the clips are not needed after assembly as the caliper holds the rotor in place, so you can remove them without issue..

So in order to check and see if there are any clips still in place, do I take off the wheel again and inspect it that way or would I be able to see the clips through the wheels looking at the rotor?

Also the 38,000 miles that I have on the pickup are easy miles without any stop and go traffic except for the past 5 months. So do you think the rotors are just warped now due to the braking intensity picking up from the stop and go traffic?

yeah wheel has to come off.. see these black clips on the lugs, they are put on at the factory to hold the rotor in place down the assembly line, the oem rims have a bevel in them to accommodate them, aftermarket wheels do not.

as for brake warping.. it's not usually low speed stop and go that does it, it's hand hard braking from high speeds then accelerating to cool then hard braking again.. ever see auto cross rotors screaming red from the heat??

crappy rotors will do it too, ask any Chrysler/Dodge owner about that..

but seeing as you didn't have the issue before the suspension and wheels and you do now, i'd say it's more related to that..

Ah ok, those clips make sense. I don't recall seeing any on the lugs but will check again. Well I defintely don't drive like an autocross racer so I don't think I have reached that high of speeds just to brake again.

The aftermarket wheels are a +10mm offset so they don't really stick out much more than the factory wheels. HOWEVER, on the drivers rear, I have a wheel that was special made cause the factory janked me and only came up with 3 wheels so they had to build the last wheel. It has a hub bore of 87mm as where the other 3 wheels are 106.1mm. Apparently it balanced just fine like the other wheels and fits on there. Would that have any effect on things even if it feels like its all about the front brakes?

And kudos to the dodge/chrysler comment!! That's pretty funny but yet true.

yeah well I was a Chrysler tech for 20 years..

87 to 106mm is a big difference.. and the wheels fit? sounds pretty odd, does it shake any other time while driving or only while braking?

what's the stock bore? 78mm - 79mm right?

My truck developed a shake when slowing down after I had the tires rotated. Ended up having the rotors resurfaced. Don't know why it didn't do before the tire rotation, but it stops smooth now.

Uh oh...I probably shouldn't have made fun of the Chrysler's then eh?!

It is a big difference between the two. Yes both sizes fit front and rear oddly enough. There is no other shake other than when braking. I have only been on the city streets which I get up to 50mph and there is no shake while cruising. I really notice it around 30-35mph braking.

I can't be certain of the stock bore...when I get my caliper working (tomorrow) I can meausre the stock wheels.

I have a couple of pictures I will try to upload if I can figure out how.

Hmmm interesting! That doesn't make much sense to me either but that is what I am leaning towards. Where would be a good place to have that done at?

You can see the difference of thicknesses of the two hubs. Look at center to the lug nuts. Unbelieveably they both fit front and rear...

I just got new wheels and tires and I had the same issue, took off the back wheels, found two clips on each side, took em off and now she brakes smooth! Tire techs had no clue what I was talking about when I called to tell them

Dang...I guess I know what I am doing tonight then! Thanks for the input. I appreciate it and will definitely not overlook the silly clips.

Wow...unreal. 2 clips on each of the rear wheels with a total of 2mm's per side of metal can throw off the entire pickup into a nasty pulsating beast. It still blows my mind that those little clips have that much effect on the whole scheme of things.

I can't thank you guys enough for the good advice, it is really appreciated. You saved me a bunch of money on un-needed items. You guys rock!! Thanks a lot for your help, you are what makes this forum so worthwhile!
