2004 Denali Blend Door Issues

Hey y'all-new guy here. I'm posting a problem for a friend of mine. I'm a Volvo guy (I own a '79, an '89, and a '97) so forgive my (possibly) noobish question. My friend has an '04 Denali, and for several days now, he's had a clicking from the dash, and hasn't been able to figure it out. I walked out to his car this evening and figured the problem out. When he has his selector set to blow floor heat, the blend door clicks pretty rapidly. As soon as I switched the selector away from floor only, say to floor/panel mix, panel, or defrost, the clicking went away. I'm used to cars that use engine vacuum to move the blend doors, so this is new to me. Is this a known issue with these trucks? Would the problem be with the blend door actuator, or somewhere else? Thanks!

Sounds like the blend door actuator. If he has dual zone climate, hopefully it is on the one on the driver's side, that one is easy to replace. If it is on the passenger side, not so easy. There is a recalibration procedure you can try first, but I can't recall it off the top of my head. I had to replace the driver's side blend door actuator on my 04 Silverado a few months back.

Wow! You have to pull the dash to get to the passenger side actuator! Man the instructions ought to say if passenger side actuator is faulty set truck on fire and start with a new one. I wonder what the dealer charges for labor on that job.

Pray that you need only perform a relearn on the stepper motor. I had to tear down a friends '03 Avalanche 2500 LT all the way to the firewall because a mouse made a nest on top of the HVAC unit and then proceeded to live a happy life, pissing and shitting all over the top of the airbox. So happy in fact, was his life that he curled up in a ball and died right there in his nest, tucked deep in the dashboard of my buddies $50,000 truck... the smell was horrible.

 

Anyway, incredibly long story short... tearing that dash down sucked.
